Frequently asked questions

  • Luxury Hotel Compare is an independent luxury hotel review site written and edited by Jack Williamson, who has spent 15 years in five-star hospitality. It ranks hotels across 10 destinations: the Maldives, Bali, Santorini, Dubai, Tokyo, Paris, Cape Town, the Amalfi Coast, New York and the Seychelles. Rankings are based on stays, room-product detail, service, property age and the price actually charged on the day. No hotel can pay to appear or to move up.
  • Readers pay nothing. The site earns a commission when someone books through a Booking.com link, and smaller commissions on Priority Pass and travel products. The rate is the same one shown on Booking.com, so booking through this site never costs more. No hotel or brand has ever paid for a placement, a ranking position or a review, and none is shown copy before it is published.
  • Yes. Every review is written by Jack Williamson from a paid stay or from documented research, never from a hosted press trip. Hotels are judged on the same criteria each time: room product, service consistency, food, location, how recently the property was renovated and what it costs against its closest rival. Where a hotel is coasting on its reputation, the review says so.
  • Ten destinations are covered in depth: the Maldives, Bali, Santorini, Dubai, Tokyo, Paris, Cape Town, the Amalfi Coast, New York and the Seychelles. Each has a ranked top 10 with individual reviews, a best-value pick, a best-for-honeymoon pick and live Booking.com rates. Cities such as Rome, Kyoto, Lisbon, Mexico City and Marrakech are covered through standalone guides.
  • Three, all bought and used personally: an Airalo eSIM for data on arrival, Priority Pass for lounge access on long-haul routes, and a Rimowa cabin case for anything under a week. Each has its own review, including where it falls short. Priority Pass is weak across US domestic terminals; Holafly beats Airalo only if you tether a laptop all day.
  • Prices are re-checked monthly against live Booking.com rates, and every ranking is re-read at least twice a year. Guides carry a visible last-updated date. When a hotel closes for renovation, changes ownership or drops in standard, the ranking is amended rather than quietly left in place.

I review these hotels myself, one property at a time, so every ranking on this site is earned rather than paid for. Rates come straight from Booking.com and update live, which means you can compare what I recommend against what it actually costs on your dates before you commit.
