The White Lotus Effect — Inside the Real Hotels & What They Cost

The one that started it all. The Four Seasons Maui served as the fictional White Lotus resort in Season 1, and the entire cast and crew lived on site during production in late 2020 because COVID-19 restrictions demanded a completely sealed bubble. The hotel's three pools, Wailea Beach frontage, Wolfgang Puck's Spago restaurant, and 15 acres of tropical grounds all feature prominently throughout the series. Production designer Laura Fox redesigned every guest room for filming, creating the now famous Pineapple Suite, the Hibiscus Suite, and the Tradewinds Suite. Fox later described the hotel's atmosphere as having a subtle menace, comparing it to The Shining, and fans have been hunting for background Easter eggs in the room artwork ever since. In reality, the rooms are more understated, but the bones of the property are exactly as you see on screen. The resort has 380 guest rooms and suites, an 11,000 square foot spa, three championship golf courses nearby, and direct access to Wailea Beach. Since Season 1 aired, the hotel has seen a reported 386% increase in online searches. Room rates start from around $1,000 per night for a garden view room, though ocean facing suites regularly exceed $5,000. The hotel sits on Maui's dry leeward coast, which means consistent sunshine and significantly less rain than the island's north shore.

If the Maui resort launched the White Lotus phenomenon, San Domenico Palace in Taormina perfected it. Originally built as a Dominican monastery in the 14th century, the property was extensively renovated by Four Seasons and reopened in 2021. Perched on a dramatic clifftop on Sicily's northeastern coast, the hotel looks out over the Ionian Sea, the snowcapped peak of Mount Etna, and the ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina. The infinity pool, the monastery courtyards, and the Michelin calibre dining room all appear throughout the second season. The hotel has 111 rooms and suites spread across the historic convent and a newer wing. The ancient cloisters, frescoed ceilings, and stone archways give the property a sense of history that no modern build can replicate. One detail most viewers do not realise: while the hotel exteriors, pool, courtyards, and restaurants are all real, the majority of bedroom scenes in Season 2 were actually filmed on a separate soundstage at Lumina Studios in Italy. Rooms start from roughly $800 per night, with Etna view suites commanding significantly more.

Season 3 broke the single hotel format that defined the first two seasons. The primary filming location was the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, set on the island's serene northwestern tip. Blackpink's Lisa (Lalisa Manobal), who plays the hotel employee Mook, reportedly helped scout filming locations alongside the production team to ensure the season authentically portrayed Thai culture. Every guest room and villa scene was filmed here, and the resort's private hillside villas with infinity pools overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the secluded private beach, and the Secret Spa Garden all feature throughout the season. But the Four Seasons was not the only hotel involved. The resort's entrance, lobby, security station, and the pivotal jewellery shop scene were filmed at the Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort. The spa and wellness consultation scenes were filmed at Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas. The dinner scenes were shot at Rosewood Phuket's Ta Khai restaurant, a five time Michelin Guide listed venue.

This is the one everyone is watching. In a departure from the Four Seasons partnership that defined the first three seasons, Season 4 moves to the Chateau de La Messardiere, a 19th century palace turned luxury hotel in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera. The property is part of the ultra exclusive Airelles Collection, owned by Stephane Courbit, who also founded Banijay Group. The chateau sits on 32 acres of parasol pines, cypress trees, and jasmine gardens, perched on a hillside with panoramic views over the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. There are 86 rooms and suites furnished in refined Riviera style: marble bathrooms, hand-printed wallpaper, rustic tiled floors, and coastal light wood. Amenities include the Airelles Spa by Valmont, indoor and outdoor pools, and private beach access via Rolls-Royce transfer. Filming runs from late April through October 2026. The cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Coogan, Sandra Bernhard, Chris Messina, Alexander Ludwig, AJ Michalka, and Vincent Cassel. Suites start from approximately €3,000 per night, climbing past €10,000 for the grandest categories. This is the most expensive White Lotus hotel yet.
