Because that list has not been published yet, this guide sets out my own elite tier of ten hotels, scored on my own criteria, plus the next 40 well known five star properties most likely to feature somewhere in the wider conversation.
The short answer
Top pick: Passalacqua, Lake Como. I would put Passalacqua first, and not because it is the newest name in the conversation. Twenty four rooms inside a restored eighteenth century villa on Lake Como, run with a level of attention that larger hotels cannot replicate at scale. Cheval Blanc Paris and Rosewood Hong Kong sit close behind it for different reasons, one for architecture and setting, the other for the sheer scale of what a harbour view can do to a room.

Let me be direct about what this article is and is not. The World's 50 Best Hotels list for 2026 does not exist yet. The ceremony that will announce it is scheduled for Paris in September 2026, which is after this guide was written, so anyone publishing a definitive 2026 ranking right now is either recycling last year's result or inventing one. I am doing neither. What follows is my own elite tier of ten hotels, scored out of 10 on criteria I control, followed by the forty other five star properties most likely to feature somewhere in that wider conversation once the actual list lands.
I researched every property in the top 10 against live availability on 24 August 2026, verified guest data, property specifications and published editorial coverage. Entries in the next 40 stay short and factual where the available evidence does not support a fuller judgement.
Which hotel is the best in the world in 2026?
Passalacqua on Lake Como. It scores 9.7 out of 10 on my own criteria, the highest score I have given any hotel, and it is the most complete small hotel in this ranking. Twenty four rooms inside a genuinely restored eighteenth century villa on the western shore, gardens laid out long before anyone thought about branding a hotel around them, and a staff to guest ratio that borders on absurd.
One caveat on the wording. This is my ranking, not the World's 50 Best Hotels awards order, which has not been published for 2026 and is not due until the Paris ceremony in September. Passalacqua is also the hardest of my ten to get into, with peak dates gone roughly a year ahead at an entry rate of around $3,400 a night checked 24 August 2026.

Twenty four rooms, a staff to guest ratio that borders on absurd, and gardens that were laid out long before anyone thought about branding a hotel around them. The boat transfer from the jetty at Cernobbio sets the tone before you have even checked in.

The Connaught remains the most consistent hotel in Mayfair, and consistency is the rarest thing in this category. I have kept each entry short and factual, and I have left out any property I was not confident actually exists and trades under the name given here.
Europe
The Ritz Paris still trades on the Hemingway bar and the Place Vendome address, restored top to bottom in 2016 and unmatched for old Paris theatre. Hotel de Crillon Paris pairs a Rosewood run interior with one of the grandest facades on the Place de la Concorde. Claridge's London remains the art deco benchmark in Mayfair for readers who want London formality without stiffness. The Savoy London holds the best river view of any London hotel from its Thames facing suites. Hotel Cipriani Venice gives you a private garden and pool on Giudecca, away from the crowds on the main island. Villa d'Este in Cernobbio is the grand dame of Lake Como, floating pool included. What the 2026 shortlist actually tells us
Looking across my own tier and the wider set of forty, a few patterns hold regardless of what the Paris ceremony eventually confirms in September. Asia now supplies as many genuine elite tier contenders as Europe, which was not true a decade ago. Hong Kong alone carries two names in my top 10, Rosewood and The Upper House, and Bangkok's Capella has moved into the same conversation within a few years of opening. That shift tracks new capital and new construction rather than any single award cycle.
Among brands, Aman and Rosewood keep adding cities without diluting the standard, which is the harder trick in hospitality. LVMH's Cheval Blanc, still a small collection, is punching well above its size, and its Paris property is the strongest single argument that a fashion house can run a hotel as seriously as a hotel company. Independent one off houses, Passalacqua chief among them, are proving that a very small, very well capitalised project can outscore an established chain almost immediately, which should worry groups that have leaned on scale rather than intensity. I take the nine groups that matter apart one by one, on room, service, loyalty and rate, in luxury hotel brands compared, and the closest of those calls, the one readers ask me about most, gets its own head to head in Four Seasons versus Ritz-Carlton.
The absences say as much as the entries. There is no Caribbean or Hawaii name anywhere near my top 10, and the reason is that a beach resort has to clear a very high bar to beat a city house on room and service at the same rate. What I see slipping is the older generation of grand European palace hotels that have not been restored this decade. Reputation carries a property only so far when a guest has stayed at Passalacqua or Capella Bangkok the week before and can compare directly. None of that means those older hotels have become bad, several remain genuinely excellent, but the ceiling for what counts as exceptional has moved, and a five year old renovation now reads as dated at this price point in a way it would not have in 2015. Passalacqua on Lake Como. It only opened in 2023, it holds twenty four rooms, and the combination of a genuinely restored eighteenth century villa with contemporary service standards is not something I have found matched elsewhere at the same intensity. It is also the hardest of the ten to get into, which tells you something about demand.
Every rate in this article was checked on 24 August 2026 for a comparable entry level double or king room in low occupancy shoulder dates, converted to US dollars where needed. Rates at this level move constantly with season, currency and event calendars, so treat these as a reference point rather than a quote, and always check live pricing before booking.
For hotels this small, calling or emailing the hotel directly, or going through a Virtuoso or Four Seasons Preferred Partner travel advisor, will often get you a better room category, an early check in or a genuine upgrade that a standard online booking will not.
