Grace Hotel Santorini
Grace Hotel Santorini has been on every serious luxury traveller's list for years, and the frustrating truth is that it deserves every word of the praise. Perched at the highest occupied point on the caldera rim in Imerovigli. 300 metres above the Aegean. the award-winning contemporary design by Divercity Architects is simultaneously of the island and entirely of its own moment: white concrete, clean angles, a pool that extends over the void as if daring you to enter, and views that on a clear day include the island of Anafi 28 kilometres to the east. The welcome, including cold towels, champagne and a personal introduction from the hotel manager, sets a tone that the property maintains without effort. The Santoro restaurant, open-air above the caldera, produces Aegean cuisine of genuine quality. the grilled octopus and Santorini cherry tomato salad are iconic for good reason. and the dinner reservation, even for hotel guests, is worth booking the moment you confirm your stay. Service is personalised to a degree that surprises even experienced luxury travellers: the pillow menu, the fragrance selection for your room, the Polaroid photograph taken on arrival and presented at departure. The one honest note: there are 150 steps involved in arriving at the hotel from the footpath above. The view that greets you at the bottom makes the descent entirely worthwhile.
