For most couples I would say the Maldives, and the first reason is choice. More than 160 resorts operate here against fewer than a dozen luxury properties in Bora Bora, which keeps competitive pressure on rates. Bora Bora generally runs 30 to 40 percent more expensive for an equivalent level of luxury, partly because only a few airlines fly to Tahiti.
The Maldives also wins decisively on marine life. The atoll geography produces coral reef habitat on a scale Bora Bora cannot match, and many resorts have a thriving house reef you can swim to straight from your villa, with reef sharks, sea turtles, manta rays and whale sharks all reliable sightings. Bora Bora has decent lagoon snorkelling with stingrays and reef sharks, but neither the coral quality nor the species count comes close to the best Maldives sites.
Bora Bora wins on two things, and for some couples they decide it. The flight from the US West Coast is around 8 hours direct compared with 22 to 26 hours to the Maldives, and the two peak seasons are opposite: Bora Bora is at its best from May through October, exactly when the Maldives is in its wet season. If your wedding falls in summer, fly to Bora Bora. If it falls between November and April, fly here.
