The short answer: no, The White Lotus is not a single real hotel chain, but every season is filmed at a real, bookable luxury property. The fictional resort is dressed for production, given a different name on screen, and supplemented with a small amount of soundstage work for interior scenes. The exteriors, pools, dining rooms and grounds you see on screen are almost always real.

Here is what is real and what is set design, season by season.

The cliffs, the cloisters, the infinity pool, the dining room and the surrounding Taormina town are all the real San Domenico Palace. The bedroom scenes were shot at Lumina Studios in Italy because the working hotel could not be entirely closed to filming.

What Is Set Design and What Is Real

The hotel name on screen is fake. The White Lotus brand does not exist. Some interior bedroom scenes are filmed on soundstages because production cannot fully take over a working luxury hotel for months at a time. Some of the on screen artwork, signage and uniforms are also created for the show. Everything else, the architecture, the pools, the gardens, the dining rooms and the surrounding locations, is genuine and bookable.

Which White Lotus Hotel to Actually Book

If you have not seen the show, the Four Seasons Koh Samui offers the best value of the four primary properties at around $1,000 per night for an Ocean View villa. If you want the most iconic backdrop, the San Domenico Palace in Taormina is unmatched. If you want the new and untested, the Chateau de La Messardiere in Saint-Tropez is the Season 4 location. We rank all four in our flagship White Lotus hotels editorial.
