    What it is like

    Bulgari Resort Bali opened in 2006 on 8.4 hectares of limestone headland at the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, a few minutes along the coast from Pura Luhur Uluwatu, the sea temple famous for its sunset Kecak dance. Antonio Citterio and his Milan studio designed it, and the result still looks remarkably coherent twenty years on: dark volcanic stone walls, hand cut Balinese hardwoods, steep alang alang thatch and a restrained Italian palette of cream, mahogany and bronze.

    The setting is the headline. The resort terraces down a cliff about 160 metres high, so almost every path ends in a sweep of open ocean.

    Service is what reviews praise most consistently. Every villa has a 24 hour butler, breakfast is served whenever and wherever you like, and check in and check out are flexible as standard when the villa is free. The Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Five Star property and the Michelin Guide has awarded it two Michelin Keys.

    Recent changes matter if you last read about it a few years ago. The main pool has been reworked as the Serpenti Pool Clvb, with gold cabanas and free snacks, fruit and cocktails for in house guests through the day. The beach has been relaunched as Serpenti Beach, a new one bedroom Serpenti Villa has been added, a Bvlgari Tennis Clvb now offers free court time, and the fine dining room is now Il Ristorante, Niko Romito, replacing the earlier Luca Fantin concept.

    The villas

    All villas are single storey (the Bvlgari Villa and mansions aside), walled, and built around a private infinity pool, an open sided outdoor living pavilion and a separate glass walled bedroom. The bathrooms are famous: a terrazzo room almost the size of the bedroom, with a deep tub, separate shower, double vanity and the full Bvlgari bath collection.

    One honest note on size. The resort's own pages list the new Serpenti Villa at 300 square metres and the two bedroom villas at 500 square metres, while third party sources quote the one bedroom villas anywhere from 300 to 500 square metres. We give the figures the resort publishes and flag the rest.

    Which villa to book

    Couples and honeymooners: book the one bedroom Ocean Cliff Villa. Several independent reviewers make the same point: many Ocean View Villas look out across the roofs of the villas below, whereas the eight cliff edge villas see nothing but water. It is the single upgrade that changes the stay most.

    Value hunters: the Ocean View Villa gets you the same interiors, bathroom, butler and inclusions. Ask for a villa high on the slope and accept a roofline in your view.

    Families with young children: a two bedroom Ocean Cliff Villa gives the children their own suite. Be aware that the resort is steep and full of stairs, and Il Ristorante does not admit children under five.

    Groups and multigenerational trips: the Three Bedroom Mansions are the smartest buy in the resort, with their own entrance, lift and spa pavilion, and they work out cheaper per couple than three separate villas on many dates.

    Once in a lifetime: the Bvlgari Villa, with its 20 metre pool and cinema, covers 1,300 square metres over two storeys. It is priced on request.

    Food and drink

    Il Ristorante, Niko Romito is the dinner room. Romito's flagship Reale in Abruzzo holds three Michelin stars, and in Bali the kitchen is run day to day by chef de cuisine Francesca Stabile, trained at the ALMA culinary school and formerly sous chef at Il Ristorante in Rome. Expect precise modern Italian cooking with Balinese produce, served 6 pm to 10 pm, resort smart casual, no children under five.

    Sangkar is the all day restaurant at the highest point of the cliff, open 6.30 am to 11 pm. The menu leans Balinese and Indonesian (grilled snapper with sambal dabu dabu, braised beef cheek in local spices) alongside international plates, under light fittings made from traditional rooster cages and art by the late Balinese painter Made Wianta.

    The Bvlgari Bar is the sunset spot, and it now hosts a Pizza Bar by Pier Daniele Seu, the Roman pizzaiolo behind Seu Pizza Illuminati, named Pizza Chef of the Year by 50 Top Pizza in 2019. Doughs are fermented for around 30 hours. Some reviewers mention that sunset tables need booking.

    Private dining can be set up in your villa, on the lawn or on the beach. Older reviews refer to La Spiaggia, a tiny grill at the foot of the cliff; the resort's current dining list no longer names it, so check what is operating on the beach during your dates.

    Honest note: several reviews call the breakfast spread underwhelming for the price, and suggest ordering à la carte to the villa instead, which is included anyway.

    Spa and activities

    The Bvlgari Spa sits at the ocean edge inside a Javanese joglo, a traditional carved wooden house, and runs daily from 9 am to 9 pm. The signature is a four hands per guest couples ritual (four therapists in total) using warm volcanic stones and aromatic oils, alongside Balinese massage, body wraps and an Ayurvedic inspired ritual.

    Beyond the spa: the Bvlgari Gymnasivm with personal trainers, the new Bvlgari Tennis Clvb with complimentary court access, 90 minute private coaching and a Little Gems children's programme, yoga with a dedicated instructor, and a clifftop wedding chapel.

    Serpenti Beach is the great set piece. An inclinator, a glass cabin that runs down the cliff face, delivers you to a sheltered white sand cove closed to the public by land and sea. There are four pairs of sunbeds and a cabana, with cold towels and drinks brought down. Swimming is another matter; currents and reef make the sea unsafe much of the time, and the beach can close in strong wind or rain.

    What drives price: cliff edge position, school holidays, Christmas and New Year, and whether packages bundle spa time or transfers (the Serpenti Villa offer for two nights or more adds a 60 minute massage for two and return limousine transfers).

    Taxes and fees: Indonesian hotels commonly quote rates before 21 percent government tax and service charge. Always confirm whether a price is inclusive. We found no separate resort fee listed, but check the final booking screen.

    Meal plans: there is no all inclusive plan. Breakfast (at any hour), non alcoholic minibar, pool snacks and a sunset aperitivo are included; lunch, dinner and alcohol are extra, and resort dining is priced at a premium. Extra beds have been reported at over US$100 a night.

    Getting there

    The resort is 11.5 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar. Most sources quote 30 to 45 minutes by car, but the Bukit roads bottleneck in late afternoon and on holidays, so allow an hour or more at peak times. Mansion guests get VIP fast track immigration; others can request it.

    Best time to go

    Bali's dry season runs roughly from April to October, the wet season from November to March. For the Bulgari specifically, May, June and September hit the sweet spot: dry skies, calm evenings for the Bvlgari Bar at sunset, and rates below the July, August and Christmas peak.

    The honest drawbacks

    • The beach is scenic, not swimmable. If a lagoon swim matters, look at Nusa Dua or the Maldives instead.
    • Some interiors feel dated. Recent guest reviews on Tripadvisor note that parts of the villas are due a refresh. The new Serpenti spaces are the exception.
    • Steep and stair heavy. Buggies help, but the slope makes it hard for anyone with limited mobility.
    • Monkeys. Macaques from the temple forest do raid outdoor minibars and bathrooms; keep doors shut.
    • Isolation. Nothing is walkable. Every meal out means a car, and resort prices add up quickly.
    • Plunge pools are modest compared with newer villa resorts nearby.
    • Weddings and events can take over public spaces on some evenings.

    Who should book, and who should not

    Book it if you want privacy, a butler, a view that stops conversation and a quiet Italian polish, and you are happy to spend most of the stay inside the gates. It is excellent for honeymoons, milestone birthdays and family groups taking a mansion.

    Skip it if you want to swim in the sea every day, walk to beach clubs, travel with a toddler who needs flat ground, or want the newest design in Bali. Travellers after culture and rice fields should split the stay with a few nights in Ubud.
