Soneva Jani vs Soneva Fushi: Overwater Drama or Barefoot Jungle?

The short verdict

These are sister resorts, and they share a lot: the No News, No Shoes ethos, a Barefoot Butler for every villa, free chocolate and ice cream rooms open around the clock, children who stay and eat free, and the Soneva Soul wellbeing programme. What differs is the landscape, and that decides almost everything else.

Soneva Fushi opened in 1995 and is widely seen as the first luxury resort in the Maldives. Kunfunadhoo is a jungle island about 1.5 km long, villas hide behind thick vegetation, and you cycle everywhere on sand paths. The house reef is good and Hanifaru Bay, famous for its manta ray feeding aggregations, is a short boat ride away in season.

Soneva Jani opened in October 2016 on Medhufaru in Noonu Atoll, around a lagoon sources put at about 5.6 km across. Most villas stand over that lagoon, nearly all with slides. It is brighter and more photogenic, but reviewers consistently note the lagoon is sandy rather than reef rich, so good snorkelling means a boat trip.

Location and arrival

Both resorts sit north of Malé and both use the Soneva Lounge, about five minutes from Velana International Airport (MLE). It has no luggage storage, though the airport has lockers.

Soneva Fushi is the quicker hop: about 30 minutes by seaplane, on Soneva's own nine seat aircraft or on Manta Air, which carries more passengers and may stop elsewhere. The alternative is a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo Airport and a 10 minute speedboat, useful after dark.

Soneva Jani is about 40 minutes by seaplane, or a 30 minute flight to Maafaru International Airport plus a 10 minute speedboat.

Published 2026 prices are identical for both: US$1,300 per adult and US$650 per child for a shared return seaplane, or US$600 and US$300 return by domestic flight. A private charter costs about US$7,000 one way on Manta Air or US$9,500 on the Soneva seaplane. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so land in Malé by about 15:30, and keep bags to 25 kg per person including hand luggage.

Some comparison sites say Fushi's seaplane is included in the rate. Soneva's own transfer pages list it as a separate charge, so budget for it unless your booking states otherwise.

Villas compared

Fushi has a long menu of land villas in many shapes; Jani offers fewer, much larger overwater and island homes.

Sizes come from Soneva's official villa pages, checked September 2026. Most one bedroom villas at both resorts sleep two adults plus two children.

One caution on Jani. Many ranking guides still call a one bedroom Water Retreat of about 410 sq m the entry villa. Soneva's current list no longer shows that name and starts overwater at the 555 sq m Water Reserve, so if a cheaper "Water Retreat" rate appears, ask exactly which villa it is.

Jani's overwater villas have the famous touches: a bedroom roof that slides open at the press of a button, a sunken bath, catamaran nets, a swing and a deck pool. Reviewers say villas on the newer southern jetty feel more private, and a few report shallow water under some slides at low tide.

Fushi's jungle villas trade views for seclusion: your own beach, deep shade, open air bathrooms and room for small children to roam. The eight Water Reserves, opened in September 2020, add Jani style slides and retractable roofs while keeping Fushi's reef and facilities.

Food

Both are serious about food, and both include the free chocolate, ice cream, cheese and charcuterie rooms plus deep wine cellars.

Soneva Fushi lists 16 venues. Flying Sauces seats you in the treetops with staff arriving by zipline (Chef Mark Lundgaard leads it); Fresh in the Garden sits above the organic gardens; So Hands On by Chef Akira is an omakase sushi counter; Out of the Blue grills over the sea; and Carne Diem Grill by Dharshan cooks on charcoal in your own villa. Reviews often call breakfast at Mihiree Mithaa the best in the country.

Soneva Jani lists 13 venues. The Crab Shack, a Sri Lankan seafood shack on the lagoon, is the best known. Director's Cut serves Japanese food above the water with teppanyaki and irori grill experiences, Saji serves Indonesian dishes by Chef Ben, and Chill blends Maldivian and Peruvian flavours. Tipsy delivers cocktails by tuk tuk.

Breakfast is included at both. In 2026 half board costs about US$250 per adult a night and full board about US$375, food only. Soneva Unlimited, the all inclusive tier, is US$1,250 per adult and US$625 per child a night, up from US$880 per adult at its 2022 launch. Check current inclusions: Fushi's meal plan page says in villa dining is excluded, and everyone paying in one villa must be on the same plan.

Spa and experiences

Both run Soneva Soul, with open air treatment rooms, yoga, Pilates, tennis, padel and Ayurvedic practitioners. Jani adds aerial yoga and, from October 2026, private wellbeing studios.

Fushi leans towards nature and making things: an observatory hidden among the trees, a glass studio, chocolate making, floating breakfasts and manta snorkelling, best at Hanifaru Bay from roughly June to November.

Jani leans towards water and sky: stargazing, films at the overwater Cinema Paradiso, paddleboarding, diving with Soleni Dive Centre and guided snorkelling trips to reefs off Kuredu.

Price compared

Soneva publishes no simple rack rate. These are indicative 2026 ranges from booking sites and specialist guides, per villa per night, before tax.

Add a 10% service charge, 17% Tourism Goods and Services Tax (up from 16% in July 2025) and a green tax of US$12 per person per night, plus transfers. A couple spending seven low season nights in an entry villa on breakfast only should budget from about US$30,000 all in.

Price drivers differ: at Fushi, villa size and whether it is overwater; at Jani, the jetty, sunset orientation and bedroom count. Free stays for children make a two bedroom Fushi villa good value for families.

Families, couples and honeymoon

Families: Fushi wins. Its Den is the larger kids club, villas are on land with shade, and toddlers are not beside deep water. Jani's Den is excellent too, with a zipline, pirate ship, swim up mocktail bar and teen hangout, but overwater decks need constant supervision.

Couples: Jani, especially on a first Maldives trip. The open roof, the slide and dinner at the Crab Shack are hard to beat.

Honeymoon: Jani, unless you are keen snorkellers, in which case a Fushi Water Reserve gives you overwater living and the reef.

Groups: Fushi, with its estates of five to nine bedrooms, has no real rival.

Drawbacks of each

Soneva Jani: The lagoon has few fish, so good snorkelling needs a boat. The resort is spread out. Some recent reviews mention tired fittings in older villas and shallow water under slides at low tide, and special dinners can feel poor value.

Soneva Fushi: The local island of Eydhafushi is visible from parts of the resort. Breakfast can be slow at peak times, the family buzz can feel less quiet than couples expect, and the cheapest Crusoe villas are far smaller than anything at Jani.

Both: Extras add up fast. Ownership also changed: KSL Capital Partners took majority control and founders Sonu and Eva Shivdasani stepped away fully in May 2025, so watch recent reviews.

Can you split your stay?

Yes. Soneva publishes inter resort transfers: about 20 minutes by seaplane at US$300 per adult and US$150 per child each way, or about 90 minutes by speedboat, with one speedboat leg free when you stay at both on one trip. Some blogs say the boat takes under an hour; the official figure is about 90 minutes.

For seven to ten nights, start at Fushi for reef days, then finish with three or four nights overwater at Jani. Fushi's shorter seaplane is kinder after a long flight, and Jani makes a spectacular finale. Soneva in Aqua, the group's two bedroom yacht, may also be available between resorts; ask reservations.

Which to book

• First time in the Maldives, couple: Soneva Jani, 1 Bedroom Water Reserve with Slide.
• Family with children under 10: Soneva Fushi, a 1 Bedroom Family Suite or 2 Bedroom Crusoe Residence.
• Family with teenagers: Either, but Jani's slides and teen hangout make it more fun; book a 2 Bedroom Water Reserve.

• Large groups: Soneva Fushi, for the estates.
