Not quite, and Monos has stopped pretending. The Toronto-designed Monos Carry-On Pro uses Makrolon polycarbonate (same family RIMOWA uses on its Essential line), Hinomoto silent-glide wheels, and a vegan-leather compression system, but the aluminium body work is one generation behind RIMOWA. For three to five years of use the difference is invisible. Past that, RIMOWA's aluminium develops the lived-in patina that the brand markets as part of the appeal, while Monos polycarbonate begins to look tired. For most luxury travellers under 30 flights a year, Monos at one-fifth the price is the rational choice in 2026.

No. Away removed the battery from its Classic suitcases in July 2023, and only cases sold before that date have one. The current design does not accommodate adding one. Monos and RIMOWA do not offer one either, so anyone who wants in-case charging in 2026 is carrying a separate power bank.

RIMOWA's value is in the global boutique repair network, genuine resale value and the social signal at a five star check in desk. If you take fewer than 15 flights a year, the premium is hard to justify on pure utility. If you take 40 or more flights a year, the cost per trip and the ability to walk into a Tokyo or Paris boutique for a wheel replacement makes it the rational long term choice.

All three offer lifetime coverage on manufacturing defects, but the experience is very different. Monos and Away require you to mail the case in and wait two to four weeks. RIMOWA lets you walk into a boutique in any major city and frequently completes wheel and handle repairs the same day. For airline-caused damage, none of the three covers you out of the box (you claim from the airline), though RIMOWA boutique staff are notably faster at producing the documentation airlines require.

The RIMOWA Original Cabin at 55 x 40 x 23 cm clears it on height, so British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and ANA all accept it within that allowance.
