For most travellers the Maldives is the better choice. It has 179 resort islands, while Bora Bora has six luxury resorts with overwater bungalows and a few simpler hotels, far richer snorkelling, proper all inclusive plans and rooms at every price. Bora Bora wins if you fly from the US West Coast (8 hours 17 minutes nonstop from Los Angeles to Tahiti), travel between June and September, or want Mount Otemanu outside your window.

Both places sell the same picture: a bungalow on stilts over a turquoise lagoon. That picture was invented in French Polynesia. Three California hoteliers known as the Bali Hai Boys built the first overwater bungalows on Raiatea in 1967, because their hotel had a reef but no beach. Hotel Bora Bora added its own in 1970, and the Maldives later turned the idea into a national industry.
What separates them is scale, geography and the flight. The Maldives is a whole country of resort islands, each one its own private world, spread across 26 atolls. Bora Bora is a single island with one lagoon, a mountain in the middle and a small village you can visit. In 2025 the Maldives welcomed 2.25 million tourists. All of French Polynesia, Bora Bora included, welcomed 281,227.
How far apart are Bora Bora and the Maldives?
14,890 km9,250 miles in a straight line
15 hourstime difference, no daylight saving
30+ hoursto fly between them, at least four flights
Bora Bora and the Maldives sit on opposite sides of the planet, about 14,890 km (9,250 miles) apart. There is no sensible way to fly between them: the quickest routings take at least four flights and an estimated 30 hours or more. The clocks are 15 hours apart too. Bora Bora runs on Tahiti time (UTC minus 10, the same as Hawaii) and the Maldives on UTC plus 5, with no daylight saving in either.
Flight times from the US, UK and Australia
For most people the flight decides this. Price both routes from your own airport before you look at a single villa, because the difference in airfare and hours often outweighs the difference in room rates.

Delta stopped flying to Tahiti in June 2025 and Air Tahiti Nui dropped Seattle in January 2026, so ignore older guides that list them. There is no nonstop from anywhere in the US to the Maldives.
Which is more expensive? The real cost of a night
Bora Bora has the higher price floor, but the Maldives adds more on top of the room. Here is how the bill builds up in each.
Room rates in the Maldives are usually quoted before a 10% service charge and 17% tourism GST, and the GST is charged on top of the service charge, so the real uplift is 28.7%. A Green Tax of $12 a person a night is added on top. In Bora Bora, InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort adds 16.595% in taxes and service (5% VAT, a 4.9% tourism tax, a 5% service charge and a 1.5% community fee, as the resort totals them), plus a city tax of 200 XPF a person a night. Other resorts are similar; check your quote.

Airport to villa, per person
Getting from the airport to your villa is where the Maldives can quietly cost more. Seaplanes fly in daylight only and are priced per person.
Five hotel brands run resorts in both places, which makes for the fairest price test there is. The answer is not what most guides say: at the very top, the Maldives is not cheaper.
Four Seasons, St. Regis and InterContinental all average more in the Maldives than in Bora Bora, though the InterContinental pair is not like for like. Conrad and Westin are far cheaper in the Maldives. So the Maldives is cheaper overall because of its range, from four star all inclusives to private islands, not because a like for like villa costs less.
Average nightly rates are KAYAK's figures for each resort's cheapest and most expensive month over the past year, across all room types, checked 22 October 2026. Overwater villas usually cost more than the average.
Every luxury overwater resort on Bora Bora
Six luxury resorts with overwater bungalows are open in late 2026, plus the simpler three star Maitai Polynesia at Matira. All sit on the same lagoon, so the questions that matter are which side faces the mountain and which villas have a pool.
108 overwater bungalows27 with a plunge poolOpened 2008Transfers included
The most complete resort on the island, and one where every stay includes the airport boat and daily breakfast. The bungalows were redesigned in 2020, and the Mountain View and Otemanu categories look straight across the lagoon at the peak; the Beach View and Lagoon View ones do not, so book by name. Ruahatu Lagoon Sanctuary, with a resident marine biologist, gives you some of the island's best snorkelling without leaving the property. Its Inclusive Plunge Pool Escape adds lunch and dinner on the plunge pool bungalows; drinks are extra.
Mount Otemanu view: Mountain View and Otemanu categories
St. Regis bills its overwater villas as the largest in the South Pacific, starting at 1,550 sq ft, and every stay comes with butler service. A private lagoonarium full of turtles and rays sits inside the resort, and the spa has its own islet. Only the five Royal Overwater Villas have a private pool; the Premier villas have a deck whirlpool instead. The airport boat is about 16,200 XPF ($152) per adult return, as reported by travellers.

Formerly the Hilton Bora Bora Nui, this became a Conrad in 2017 and reopened on 1 May 2026 after a refresh that began in January. It sits on the sunset side of the lagoon in a private cove, with a hilltop spa and an infinity pool with a swim up bar, so most villas look out over the lagoon rather than to the mountain, and eight Sunset View villas face west; only four are named for Otemanu. Hilton Honors points work here, as they do at its Maldives twin. The airport boat is 18,000 XPF ($169) per adult return.

The former Le Méridien Bora Bora closed in 2020 and reopened as a Westin in September 2024 after a full renovation. It now has more overwater bungalows than anywhere else on the island, a turtle rescue centre on site and six places to eat and drink. Plunge pools come with the higher categories. Budget for a compulsory destination fee, reported at 11,550 XPF (about $109) per room per night, which covers the airport boat.

The smaller, simpler and cheaper choice, and the only one on the main island rather than a motu. That means you can walk to Matira, the island's best public beach, and to local restaurants. None of the bungalows has a private pool, nine face the mountain, and a dinner, bed and breakfast offer keeps meal costs in check.
Mount Otemanu view: Nine Otemanu Mountain View bungalows
Two big names are missing for a reason. InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed on 1 June 2026 and is due to reopen in late 2027 as Regent Bora Bora, with 84 overwater villas. Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island is closed and both Sofitel hotels on the island were placed in liquidation, with no reopening announced. Older guides that list them, or Le Méridien and Hilton by their old names, are out of date.
The Maldives resorts to compare them with
The five brand twins, plus three Maldives resorts with no equivalent on Bora Bora. With 179 resorts to choose from, these are a starting point; the full shortlists live in The Maldives Collection.
Every water villa has a poolSeaplane 35 to 40 minOpened 2006Resident marine biologists
The like for like rival to Four Seasons Bora Bora, and on average a little more expensive. Every water villa has its own pool, the resort sits in the Baa Atoll biosphere reserve near Hanifaru Bay's manta gatherings, and marine biologists run the reef programmes. The seaplane is the catch: $920 per adult return before 28.7% tax, where Bora Bora's boat is free.
44 overwater villasAll with a private pool182 square metresOpened 2016
Every one of the 44 overwater villas has a private pool, which is the clearest difference from Bora Bora, where only five St. Regis overwater villas do. Butler service travels with the brand, and a house reef runs under the villas. Here too the Maldives averages more than its Bora Bora twin.

One of the biggest price gaps of any pair: in its cheapest month Rangali averages about half what Conrad Bora Bora Nui does in its own. Two islands joined by a 500 metre bridge, Ithaa undersea restaurant, The Muraka undersea residence (back from 15 December 2026) and whale shark trips in South Ari. The entry Sunrise Water Villa has a whirlpool rather than a pool.
Baa Atoll biosphere reserveSeaplane or boatMarriott BonvoyVillas with private pools
The Westin pair shows the Maldives at its best value. Westin's Baa Atoll resort averages $500 a night in June, against $1,244 in the cheapest month at The Westin Bora Bora, and its villas come with a private deck and pool.
Every villa has a poolAll inclusive plansManta Trust partnerOpened 2019
Not a perfect twin, since Le Moana is a simpler four star, but it shows what the Maldives offers that Bora Bora does not: every villa has a private pool, all guests get Club InterContinental perks, and there are proper All Inclusive and Premium All Inclusive plans. The resort works with The Manta Trust and sits within reach of Hanifaru Bay.

Pick this if the reef is the point. The resort runs the Maldives Underwater Initiative with The Manta Trust, the Olive Ridley Project and Blue Marine Foundation, and turtles, mantas and dolphins are regulars. Some water villas have pools, the entry ones do not.
Adults only, 18+Speedboat 15 to 20 minPremium All InclusiveHouse reef 20 m off the beach
Proof of how low the Maldives can go. A four star, adults only resort 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, with overwater villas, a house reef 20 metres off the beach and an all inclusive plan. None of Bora Bora's luxury overwater resorts comes close on price. The overwater villas cost more than the averages here, which cover every room type.
Snorkelling and marine life: which has more in the water?
The Maldives
More of everything. The country holds more than 1,100 fish species and over 250 kinds of coral, and many resorts have a house reef you can swim to from the beach or your villa steps. Manta season peaks from June to November, when Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll draws them in to feed (snorkel only, with daily limits). South Ari is known for a whale shark aggregation that stays all year. Reefs took a hit from heat stress in 2024 and recovery is uneven, so ask about the house reef before you book.
Bora Bora
Beautiful, calm and shallow, but sandier. The lagoon is a designated Important Shark and Ray Area: blacktip reef sharks, stingrays and spotted eagle rays are easy to see, and Anau on the east side is a year round manta site where they often show from the surface. Humpback whales pass through French Polynesia from July to November. Serious divers usually add Rangiroa or Fakarava to the trip.
Best time to visit: month by month
The two have almost opposite seasons, which settles the question for many people with fixed dates.
MaléBora Bora
In the Maldives the dry northeast monsoon runs from January to March, with 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day. The wetter southwest monsoon runs from mid May to November, which is also when prices fall and mantas gather.
Bora Bora is in the southern hemisphere, so its dry season is the northern summer. June to September brings 62 to 86 mm of rain a month and slightly cooler air. December and January are the wettest months, and the warm season can occasionally bring a cyclone: Cyclone Oli damaged homes and hotels on Bora Bora in February 2010.

Bora Bora: Météo France averages for Bora Bora airport, 1991 to 2020. Malé: 10 year averages (2016 to 2025) from Maldives Meteorological Service yearbook data. Rain varies a lot from year to year in the Maldives, and the south is wetter than the north. Single months can buck the pattern in Malé: June averaged 89 mm in this period, yet the southwest monsoon makes June to November the wetter, cloudier half of the year overall.
Life off the resort, rules and money
Leaving the resort
In Bora Bora you can take a boat to Vaitape, the main village, for shops, a market and restaurants that are not your hotel's. In the Maldives your resort island is your world; visiting a local island means a paid excursion, and those islands are dry.
Alcohol and dress
French Polynesia is part of France, so drinks and dress are as relaxed as anywhere in Europe. In the Maldives alcohol is served only on resort islands and liveaboards, you cannot bring any in (duty free included), and swimwear is for resorts and designated beaches.
Money and tipping
Bora Bora uses the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro; tipping is not expected. Maldives resorts price in US dollars and already add a 10% service charge, so extra tips are optional.
Entry
The Maldives gives every nationality a 30 day visa on arrival, with no fee charged; fill in the IMUGA declaration online in the 96 hours before you land. US citizens need no visa for French Polynesia for up to 90 days, and the US State Department advises six months of passport validity. Visitors from the UK, Canada and Australia are widely reported as visa free too; check your government's advice.
Plugs
Bora Bora uses French type C and E sockets at 230 volts. The Maldives uses C, D and G at 230 volts, and most resort sockets take any plug.
Which should you choose?

Some resorts with overwater villas average under $400 a night in their cheapest month, and there is a guesthouse tier too.
Bora BoraYou want the postcard view
Nothing in the Maldives looks like Mount Otemanu.
Bora BoraYou want to wander a village and eat out
Vaitape is a short boat ride from the motu resorts, or a drive from Le Moana.
Can you do both, and what else to consider
Almost nobody should try to do both in one trip. They are 14,890 km apart and the routing is a round the world project. Each has a better partner: Bora Bora pairs with Moorea, Taha'a or Rangiroa on short Air Tahiti hops, and the Maldives pairs with Sri Lanka or a Gulf city stopover.
If you love the idea of French Polynesia but not Bora Bora's prices, Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts on Taha'a has overwater suites that look across to Bora Bora, and Moorea and Tahiti have overwater bungalows a short hop from Papeete. The Brando on Tetiaroa is the territory's one truly all inclusive luxury resort, though its villas are on the beach, not over the water.
Fiji
Closer to Australia and New Zealand, with a wide spread of family resorts. Overwater villas exist but are rarer.
Granite boulder beaches and real island life, reached via the Gulf. The draw is the beaches rather than overwater villas.
Moorea and Tahiti
The same French Polynesian lagoons and overwater bungalows, usually for less, a short flight or ferry from Papeete.
Maldives vs Bora Bora: your questions
Is the Maldives or Bora Bora more expensive?
Like for like it depends on the brand: Four Seasons and St. Regis average more in the Maldives, Conrad and Westin far less. Bora Bora's overwater resorts usually cost more at the entry level, because a handful of luxury resorts share one small island and the cheaper hotels there have few overwater rooms. The Maldives adds more on top: 28.7% in service and tax plus a $12 Green Tax a person a night, and seaplanes of $700 to $1,300 a person. On a $1,000 room rate for two, you pay about $1,311 a night in the Maldives and about $1,170 in Bora Bora.
Which is better, the Maldives or Bora Bora?
The Maldives is better for snorkelling, all inclusive plans, choice and value, with 179 resorts to pick from. Bora Bora is better for scenery, a shorter flight from the US West Coast, and the chance to leave your resort for a village and local restaurants.
How far is Bora Bora from the Maldives?
About 14,890 km (9,250 miles) in a straight line. They are on opposite sides of the world, and flying between them takes at least four flights and an estimated 30 hours or more.
How long is the flight to Bora Bora from the US?
Air Tahiti Nui flies Los Angeles to Papeete nonstop in about 8 hours 17 minutes, and United and French Bee fly from San Francisco in around 8 to 9 hours. Then a 50 minute Air Tahiti flight takes you to Bora Bora.
Is there a direct flight to the Maldives from the US?
No. Every routing from the US connects, usually in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul. New York to Malé takes about 18 to 19 hours, Los Angeles about 21 to 22.
When is the best time to visit Bora Bora vs the Maldives?
Their seasons are opposite. Bora Bora is driest from June to September. The Maldives is driest from January to March, with December and April as shoulder months.
Does Bora Bora have all inclusive resorts?
Not in the way the Maldives does. None of the six luxury resorts sells a plan that includes drinks on its own website in late 2026. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora sells a full board package with breakfast, lunch, dinner and transfers on its plunge pool bungalows, and several resorts offer dinner, bed and breakfast deals. The Maldives has many true all inclusive plans, including at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort and Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives.
Which has better snorkelling?
The Maldives, clearly. It has house reefs at many resorts, more than 1,100 fish species, mantas from June to November and whale sharks all year in South Ari. Bora Bora's lagoon is known for rays and blacktip reef sharks, plus a manta site at Anau.
Can you see Mount Otemanu from every overwater bungalow?
In French Polynesia. The first were built on Raiatea in 1967 by three California hoteliers known as the Bali Hai Boys. Bora Bora's first arrived at Hotel Bora Bora in 1970.
Do I need a visa?
The Maldives gives every nationality a 30 day visa on arrival, with the online IMUGA form filed in the 96 hours before you land. US citizens can visit French Polynesia visa free for up to 90 days.
Is the Maldives or Bora Bora better for a honeymoon?
Both are classic honeymoon picks, and the flight usually decides it. From the US West Coast, Australia or New Zealand, Bora Bora is the easier trip. From the UK, Europe or the Middle East, the Maldives is. Choose the Maldives for snorkelling and seclusion, Bora Bora for the mountain view and evenings out.
