The Maldives has nine underwater restaurants and two underwater bedrooms. Ithaa at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island opened in 2005 as the world's first all glass undersea restaurant, 5.8 at Hurawalhi Island Resort bills itself as the largest all glass one, and Only BLU at OBLU SELECT Lobigili, with 46 seats, is billed as the biggest in the country. To sleep underwater you have two choices: the Aqua Villa at Pullman Maldives Maamutaa, or The Muraka at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, which is closed for refurbishment until 15 December 2026. This is where all glass undersea dining started. Ithaa sank into place beside Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in November 2004 and opened in April 2005, a 175 tonne acrylic tunnel five metres down with room for just 14 guests. Lunch is four courses and dinner six, with Maldivian lobster and Wagyu, and you leave your shoes at the top of the spiral staircase.
Who can book: Dinner is for ages 14 and over; children are welcome at lunch, free under six if they order from the kids menu and $183 from 6 to 11. Guests of other resorts can book a day visit, though anyone coming from 100 km or more away has to book a night's stay. Transport is charged on top and priced by where you are coming from; the seaplane from Malé is $700 per adult return.
TipIthaa opens only several days a week, so book at least 24 hours ahead and arrive 15 minutes early. Cancelling within 12 hours costs half the price.

A half submerged steel cube in the lagoon that you snorkel to, opened in 2018 by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor. In September 2018 police acting on a court order destroyed its human figures, which were judged contrary to Islam. The cube and its coral trail remain, and the resort now presents it mainly as a coral regeneration project.

Yes, two places have underwater bedrooms. The Muraka at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a residence with its master bedroom about five metres down, closed until 15 December 2026, and Pullman Maldives Maamutaa has two Aqua Villas with an underwater bedroom.
How much does the underwater hotel in the Maldives cost?
Neither resort publishes a rate. The Muraka was reported at $50,000 a night when it opened in 2018, with recent press quoting $12,000 to $50,000. The Pullman Aqua Villa launched at $6,500 a night for two in 2020.

Which is the cheapest underwater restaurant in the Maldives?
Lunch at 5.8 at Hurawalhi Island Resort, $250 a person, or Subsix at Niyama, $250 including service and tax at its January 2025 launch. The cheapest way overall is a resort that includes it: M6m at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO and Only BLU at OBLU SELECT Lobigili are part of their all inclusive plans.
Which island has the underwater restaurant Ithaa?
Ithaa is at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in South Ari Atoll, about 30 minutes from Malé by seaplane. It opened in 2005 and is widely described as the world's first all glass undersea restaurant.
