The Hay-Adams, view towards the White House, Washington DC

Washington DC · Location guide

The Best Luxury Hotels Within Walking Distance of the White House

Straight line distance is misleading in Washington. The Treasury Building and a road closed since 1995 change everything. Here are the real walking times.

The quick answer

The Hay-Adams is the answer. It sits 320 metres from the White House in a straight line but only about 220 metres and three minutes on foot, straight down 16th Street and across Lafayette Park, and it is the only luxury hotel whose own materials place guest rooms overlooking the White House. Hotel Washington is marginally closer as the crow flies at 296 metres, and its VUE Rooftop overlooks the White House, but the Treasury Building forces its guests north and around, making the walk about ten minutes.

Why straight line distance lies in this part of Washington

Straight line distance is close to useless here, for two reasons. The block of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House has been closed to vehicles since 1995, after the Oklahoma City bombing, though it stays open on foot. And the Treasury Building physically blocks Pennsylvania Avenue between 15th Street and the White House, so anyone approaching from the east has to walk north to H Street and come back down.

That is why the Willard is 364 metres away and an eleven minute walk.

How I measured

Straight line distances are measured to the White House building centre. Walking distances are measured on foot to the public viewing point on the Pennsylvania Avenue pedestrian plaza at the 1600 frontage, which is why a few walking figures come out shorter than the straight line.

The closest five

The five hotels you can reach on foot in about ten minutes or less, or very nearly.

Hotel Washington

317 rooms, built in 1918 by Carrere and Hastings. It traded as the W Washington D.C. from 8 October 2009 until the 2021 sale, when the owners ended the W franchise and restored the historic name. The rooftop is VUE. The drawback is the walk: closest on the map, but ten minutes on foot because of the Treasury Building.

The Hay-Adams

145 rooms and 21 suites. Guest rooms on the south side overlook the White House and the Washington Monument, and Top of the Hay has a wraparound balcony with White House views. It opened in 1928 at 16th and H, on the site of the John Hay and Henry Adams houses. The view belongs to the south side only, so check which side you are booking.

Willard InterContinental

404 keys, 335 rooms and 69 suites. Host to the political elite since 1818 and known as the Residence of Presidents. The Round Robin Bar is temporarily relocated to the Lincoln Library while it is restored.

Sofitel DC Lafayette Square

237 rooms and 23 suites, in a 1925 building by Mihran Mesrobian. Its own copy says two blocks from the White House, and at five minutes on foot that holds up. A White House view is not claimed by the hotel.

The St. Regis Washington, D.C.

Opened on 1 October 1926 as the Carlton Hotel, also by Mihran Mesrobian. Around 200 rooms after the 1987 to 1988 refurbishment, and owned by Al Rayyan Tourism Investment since 2015. A White House view is not claimed by the hotel.

What has changed recently

If you are searching under an old name, this is why the hotel seems to have vanished.

  • Salamander Washington DC no longer exists under that name. It reopened on 6 August 2026 as The Potomac Hotel, Autograph Collection, with 373 rooms. Dogon continues.
  • W Washington DC is now Hotel Washington. Any guide still calling it the W is out of date.
  • The Waldorf Astoria now runs the Old Post Office clock tower, taking over from the National Park Service. Entry is free, Wednesday to Saturday, 9am to noon, with the entrance at the rear off 12th Street NW. The federal government sold the building in June 2026 to the existing leaseholder, and the hotel keeps trading as Waldorf Astoria Washington DC.
  • The LINE DC is open and taking bookings, but the property went to a foreclosure auction won by its lender and its food and beverage operation changed hands in July 2026. Treat ownership as unsettled.

Staying near the White House: your questions

Which DC hotel is closest to the White House?

Hotel Washington at 296 metres in a straight line. But the Hay-Adams at 320 metres has by far the shortest walk, about 220 metres or three minutes, because the Treasury Building forces Hotel Washington guests north and around.

Which hotel has a view of the White House?

Two. The Hay-Adams says its south side guest rooms overlook the White House and the Washington Monument, and Top of the Hay has White House views from a wraparound balcony. Hotel Washington's VUE Rooftop overlooks it too.

Can you walk to the White House from Georgetown hotels?

Yes, but it is a long walk. The Four Seasons is about 2 kilometres and 27 minutes. Rosewood is about 2.5 kilometres and 33 minutes. Both follow Pennsylvania Avenue east.

How far is the Willard from the White House?

364 metres in a straight line, about 850 metres and eleven minutes to walk. The Treasury Building interrupts Pennsylvania Avenue and the block in front of the White House has been closed to vehicles since 1995, so the route goes north to H Street, west past Lafayette Square, then south on Madison Place.

Which DC luxury hotel is best for a first visit?

The Hay-Adams. The shortest walk of any luxury hotel at about three minutes, the only one whose own materials place rooms overlooking the White House, and a small 145 room scale on Lafayette Square. If heritage matters more than the view, the Willard.
