Which Cabo San Lucas Resorts Have a Beach You Can Actually Swim At
Most Los Cabos beaches are not safe for swimming. Here are the resorts that sit on water you can actually get into, and the ones that send you elsewhere.
The quick answer
Only a handful of Los Cabos beaches are safe to swim at, and several famous resorts sit on water you should stay out of. If you want to walk from your sunbed into the sea, book ME Cabo, Casa Dorada or Bahia Hotel on Medano Beach, Chileno Bay Auberge on Chileno Bay, Montage Los Cabos on Santa Maria Bay, One and Only Palmilla on Palmilla Beach, or Hotel El Ganzo in Puerto Los Cabos. Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, Grand Velas, Nobu and Viceroy all tell guests in their own words not to swim at their beach.
That is not a knock on those four. They are lovely hotels with serious pools. It just means the sea is something you look at from the terrace, and a taxi ride away if you want to get in it.

Read the flag before you read the brochure
Before anything else, one habit worth forming. The Los Cabos Tourism Board tells visitors to look for green flags for safe water, and to treat black or red flags as unsafe. Conditions change from day to day, so even on the calm beaches below, the flag flying that morning has the final word.
Blue Flag is not the same as swimmable
This is where a lot of people get caught out, so it is worth a minute. Blue Flag is an award run by the Foundation for Environmental Education, and it certifies water quality, safety management and accessibility. It does not certify that the sea in front of you is calm enough to swim in.
The clearest example is Las Viudas. It holds Blue Flag certification, yet it does not appear on any Los Cabos Tourism Board swimmable beach list. Clean water and safe water are two different questions.
Los Cabos had 27 Blue Flag certified beaches as of the awards announced on 14 September 2025. So when a resort leads with its Blue Flag, treat it as good news about the water quality, then check whether the beach is also on the tourism board's swimmable list.
The beaches you can swim at
These are the beaches the Los Cabos Tourism Board lists as swimmable, and the reason each one is calm when so much of this coast is not.

The resorts on water you can swim in
Seven resorts where the sea in front of your room is one you can actually get into. Three share Medano, the rest each have a cove of their own.
ME Cabo by Melia
Melia describes ME Cabo as located on one of the swimmable beaches in Cabo, with direct beach access. You are on Medano, the town's calm beach, which is exactly where you want to be if swimming is the point.
Casa Dorada
Casa Dorada's own FAQ calls its stretch "the best swimmable and certified blue flag Medano Beach, just a couple steps outside". Handy for families who like to switch between sea and pool, since the pools stay open from 8am to 10pm.
Bahia Hotel and Beach House
Bahia's own site calls its stretch "the only swimmable stretch of beach in Cabo San Lucas". Worth knowing before you book, though: the hotel itself sits one block back from the sand, a three minute stroll to the beach.
Chileno Bay, Auberge Resorts Collection
Auberge describes "highly swimmable shores" here, with the reef less than 20 yards from shore. That makes it one of the easiest places in Los Cabos to snorkel straight off the sand.
Montage Los Cabos
Montage sits on Santa Maria Bay, a protected marine sanctuary, and the calmest water of any resort here. If the sea is being lively, there are three pools: a main pool, the adults only Serenity pool and an upper family pool. Beach butlers look after the sand.
One and Only Palmilla
Palmilla Beach is officially swimmable, with clean restrooms and potable water. It is the one to pick on the corridor side of San Jose del Cabo if you want to swim without a drive.
Hotel El Ganzo
El Ganzo's own site calls its beach "one of the only swimmable beaches in all of San Jose del Cabo" and "a calm, swimmable cove". You reach it by boat or barefoot from your suite, which is a rather nice way to start the day.
The resorts that tell you not to swim
These four are quoted in their own words, because the hotels say it more plainly than I could. Each has good pools, and in most cases a swimmable beach within a short ride.
Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal
Its own FAQ says: "Due to strong currents we advise against swimming here." The nearest swimmable beach is Medano, five minutes by taxi. At the resort you have two main pools, one by Don Manuel's Restaurant and one by the Beach Club Restaurant.
Grand Velas Los Cabos
Its own FAQ says: "The beach in front of Grand Velas is not suitable for swimming." Chileno is about a mile away, and on site there are three heated infinity pools.
Nobu Hotel Los Cabos
Its own FAQ says: "Ocean conditions can be unsafe for swimming due to strong currents and drop-offs." The hotel does not name a nearby swimmable beach. You get four pools instead: Pacific, Cortez, an adults only Infinity pool and the Cortez swim up bar.
Viceroy Los Cabos
Its own FAQ says the beach is "not recommended for swimming due to strong currents." Palmilla, which is swimmable, is about ten minutes away by car.

Can you swim at Medano Beach?
Yes. The Los Cabos Tourism Board lists it as swimmable. It is shielded from the Pacific's roughest swells and its water is safe for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Several Medano hotel sections hold Blue Flag certification.
Which Los Cabos beaches are safe for swimming?
Medano, Lovers Beach, Playa Acapulquito, Chileno, Santa Maria, Palmilla and Cabo Pulmo, plus Playa El Ganzo in San Jose del Cabo. Always check the flag flying that day. Green means safe, red or black means stay out.
Is the beach at Waldorf Astoria Pedregal swimmable?
No. The resort's own FAQ advises against swimming because of strong currents and points guests to Medano Beach, five minutes away by taxi. It has two main pools.
Which Cabo resort has the calmest water?
Montage Los Cabos has the strongest case. Santa Maria Bay sits between two granite outcrops that block the surf swell and the wind, which is why the water there stays flat. Chileno Bay Auberge also claims some of the calmest water in Baja.
Do Cabo hotel beaches have lifeguards?
Mostly no. The only confirmed lifeguard stand on a swimmable beach in Los Cabos is the public one at Chileno. Do not assume your resort provides one.
