# The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026: The Winners Ranked and Where to Book Them

The official list is not out until the Paris ceremony in September. Here is my own elite tier, scored out of 10.

In one paragraph. The World's 50 Best Hotels is an annual awards list voted on by an anonymous international panel, with the 2026 result due at a ceremony in Paris in September 2026. Because that list has not been published yet, this guide sets out my own elite tier of ten hotels, scored on my own criteria, plus the next 40 well known five star properties most likely to feature somewhere in the wider conversation.

Quick Answer

**Top pick: Passalacqua, Lake Como.** I would put Passalacqua first, and not because it is the newest name in the conversation. Twenty four rooms inside a restored eighteenth century villa on Lake Como, run with a level of attention that larger hotels cannot replicate at scale. Cheval Blanc Paris and Rosewood Hong Kong sit close behind it for different reasons, one for architecture and setting, the other for the sheer scale of what a harbour view can do to a room.

Updated August 2026 by Jack Williamson. Rates last verified 24 August 2026 against live availability.

Let me be direct about what this article is and is not. The World's 50 Best Hotels list for 2026 does not exist yet. The ceremony that will announce it is scheduled for Paris in September 2026, which is after this guide was written, so anyone publishing a definitive 2026 ranking right now is either recycling last year's result or inventing one. I am doing neither. What follows is my own elite tier of ten hotels, scored out of 10 on criteria I control, followed by the forty other five star properties most likely to feature somewhere in that wider conversation once the actual list lands.

I have stayed at every property in the top 10, most of them more than once, and I have priced every rate against live availability on 24 August 2026. Where I have not stayed somewhere in the next 40, I have said so by keeping the entry short and factual rather than dressing it up. If a hotel is not on this list, it is either because I could not verify its current standing or because I have not visited, not because it is unworthy.

01

## The elite tier at a glance

Ten hotels, each scored on room quality, service consistency, food and whether the nightly rate felt fair for what arrived. These are my scores, not the awards order, and I have said so plainly in every column that could be mistaken for one.

A short review of each hotel, with one honest drawback for every name. None of these hotels is flawless, and a rate this high should earn the right to be criticised properly.

#1 Lake Como, Italy

### 1\. Passalacqua

From USD$3,400 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

Passalacqua opened in 2023 inside a genuinely restored eighteenth century villa on the western shore of Lake Como, and it remains the most complete small hotel I have stayed in anywhere. Twenty four rooms, a staff to guest ratio that borders on absurd, and gardens that were laid out long before anyone thought about branding a hotel around them. The boat transfer from the jetty at Cernobbio sets the tone before you have even checked in.

**Best for:** The most complete small hotel I have stayed in, built from a genuinely restored eighteenth century villa rather than a new build dressed to look old.

**Watch out:** The drawback is availability. With so few rooms, peak season dates sell out roughly a year ahead, and the entry rate of around $3,400 a night checked 24 August 2026 puts it beyond a genuine splurge for most travellers. If you can get in, I would not hesitate.

#2 Paris, France

### 2\. Cheval Blanc Paris

From USD$2,900 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

LVMH converted the former Samaritaine department store into a 72 room hotel overlooking the Seine, and the result reads more like a private house than a flagship. The Dior spa in the basement is one of the best hotel spas in the city, and the top floor suites look directly across to the Louvre. Cheval Blanc Paris pairs Parisian formality with a lightness that older palace hotels in the city rarely manage. For more on the city, see my [Paris hotel guide](/destinations/paris).

Key Facts

- LHC score: 9.5 out of 10

**Best for:** A Samaritaine department store turned into 72 rooms above the Seine, with a Dior spa and the calmest concierge desk in the city.

**Watch out:** The honest drawback is noise from the Pont Neuf side on rooms facing the river during summer, when riverside foot traffic runs late. Ask for a courtyard facing room if you sleep lightly.

#3 Hong Kong

### 3\. Rosewood Hong Kong

From USD$1,150 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

Rosewood Hong Kong occupies a purpose built tower on the Kowloon waterfront, and it treats a full harbour view, ferries and skyline included, as the standard room outlook rather than a premium add on. The vertical layout means the pool, spa and dining all sit on high floors with the same view, which changes the way the whole stay feels compared with a low rise resort.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 9.4 out of 10

**Best for:** A vertical resort on the Kowloon waterfront that treats a harbour view as the baseline rather than the upsell.

**Watch out:** The drawback is scale. At more than four hundred rooms this is closer to a very well run large hotel than an intimate one, and the lobby can feel busy at weekend afternoon tea.

#4 London, England

### 4\. The Connaught

From USD$1,650 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

The Connaught remains the most consistent hotel in Mayfair, and consistency is the rarest thing in this category. Staff turnover is low enough that regular guests are remembered by name and preference, the Connaught Bar is still one of the best in London, and the Aman branded spa downstairs is a genuine destination rather than a hotel amenity.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 9.3 out of 10

**Best for:** The most reliably excellent hotel in Mayfair, where the staff turnover is low enough that returning guests are remembered by name.

**Watch out:** The honest drawback is that the entry level rooms, while excellent, are genuinely small for the rate, a legacy of the building's Georgian bones rather than a design choice.

#5 Tokyo, Japan

### 5\. Aman Tokyo

From USD$1,400 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

Aman Tokyo sits on the top six floors of the Otemachi Tower, and the design, all washi paper, wood and stone, creates a calm that has nothing to do with the city thirty floors below. The spa pool looking over the Imperial Palace gardens is one of the best hotel views in Japan, and the service is unhurried in a way few city hotels manage. My [Tokyo hotel guide](/destinations/tokyo) covers where else to look in the city.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 9.2 out of 10

**Best for:** A wood and paper calm dropped onto the top six floors of the Otemachi tower, with a spa pool that looks over the Imperial Palace gardens.

**Watch out:** The drawback is that the sheer scale of the atrium and the lobby lounge, while beautiful, can make the hotel feel slightly institutional compared with the intimacy Aman built its name on elsewhere.

#6 Marrakech, Morocco

### 6\. La Mamounia

From USD$980 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

La Mamounia's garden alone justifies the rate, twenty acres of orange, olive and palm trees inside the medina walls, something no new build anywhere in Marrakech can replicate regardless of budget. The hotel dates to 1923 and the restoration has kept the Moorish detailing intact rather than modernising it away, which is increasingly rare at this level.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 9.1 out of 10

**Best for:** The garden alone justifies the address, twenty acres of orange and olive trees inside the medina walls that no new build can replicate.

**Watch out:** The drawback is that the standard rooms, away from the garden facing categories, feel dated next to the public spaces, and the gap between entry rooms and suites is unusually wide here.

#7 Bangkok, Thailand

### 7\. Capella Bangkok

From USD$820 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

Capella Bangkok built its own private dock and ferry service on the Chao Phraya rather than compromise on a site that could not otherwise be reached easily, and that decision defines the whole stay. The kitchen runs a serious Thai programme alongside an equally serious European one, and the riverside pool villas are among the best private pool set ups in the city.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 9 out of 10

**Best for:** A riverside hotel that made its own dock and its own ferry rather than compromise on the site, with a kitchen that runs a serious Thai and European programme in parallel.

**Watch out:** The drawback is the location itself. Being slightly outside the main downtown grid means a taxi or the hotel boat is required for almost everything, which suits a slower trip better than a short city break.

#8 Hong Kong

### 8\. The Upper House

From USD$780 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

The Upper House remains the most design literate hotel in Hong Kong, all limestone, timber and quiet corridors, run by a team that consistently undersells rather than oversells what is on offer. Every room is technically a suite, which at this rate is a genuine point of difference rather than marketing language.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 8.9 out of 10

**Best for:** The most design literate hotel in the city, all limestone and timber, run by a team that undersells rather than oversells the experience.

**Watch out:** The drawback is that the hotel has no pool of its own worth mentioning, relying instead on a small fitness studio, which is a real gap for a stay of more than two or three nights.

#9 Florence, Italy

### 9\. Four Seasons Firenze

From USD$1,050 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

Four Seasons Firenze wraps a Renaissance palazzo in the largest private garden in Florence, a genuine rarity in a city with almost no green space at hotel scale. The frescoed ceilings in the original palazzo rooms are the real thing rather than reproduction work, and the garden pool is a serious asset in Tuscan summer heat.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 8.8 out of 10

**Best for:** The largest private garden in Florence wrapped around a Renaissance palazzo, a genuine rarity in a city with almost no green space at hotel scale.

**Watch out:** The drawback is distance from the historic centre. It is a fifteen to twenty minute walk or a short taxi to the Duomo, which some guests paying this rate do not expect from a Florence address.

#10 Chicago, USA

### 10\. The Peninsula Chicago

From USD$720 a night, rates checked 24 August 2026

The Peninsula Chicago transplants the brand's quiet, exact service formula onto Michigan Avenue, with one of the best spa pools of any American city hotel sitting on the top floor with skyline views in both directions. The in room technology and the turndown service are still a level above most American competitors at the same rate.

Key Facts

- LHC score: 8.7 out of 10

**Best for:** The Peninsula formula of quiet, exact service transplanted onto Michigan Avenue, with one of the best spa pools of any American city hotel.

**Watch out:** The drawback is that the hotel's Michigan Avenue location, while convenient, sits directly on one of the city's busiest shopping streets, and lower floor rooms pick up street noise that higher categories avoid.

## What the 2026 shortlist actually tells us

Looking across my own tier and the wider set of forty, a few patterns hold regardless of what the Paris ceremony eventually confirms in September. Asia now supplies as many genuine elite tier contenders as Europe, which was not true a decade ago. Hong Kong alone carries two names in my top 10, Rosewood and The Upper House, and Bangkok's Capella has moved into the same conversation within a few years of opening. That shift tracks new capital and new construction rather than any single award cycle.

Among brands, Aman and Rosewood keep adding cities without diluting the standard, which is the harder trick in hospitality. LVMH's Cheval Blanc, still a small collection, is punching well above its size, and its Paris property is the strongest single argument that a fashion house can run a hotel as seriously as a hotel company. Independent one off houses, Passalacqua chief among them, are proving that a very small, very well capitalised project can outscore an established chain almost immediately, which should worry groups that have leaned on scale rather than intensity.

What I see slipping is the older generation of grand European palace hotels that have not been restored this decade. Reputation carries a property only so far when a guest has stayed at Passalacqua or Capella Bangkok the week before and can compare directly. None of that means those older hotels have become bad, several remain genuinely excellent, but the ceiling for what counts as exceptional has moved, and a five year old renovation now reads as dated at this price point in a way it would not have in 2015. For a wider brand by brand comparison, see my [Aman versus Six Senses versus Rosewood versus Bulgari guide](/travel-guides/aman-vs-six-senses-vs-rosewood-vs-bulgari-2026), and if you are weighing how to pay for stays at this level, my [hotel loyalty programme guide](/travel-guides/best-luxury-hotel-loyalty-programme-2026) covers where points still make sense against a $1,000 a night rate.

## Frequently Asked Questions

- ### Has the World's 50 Best Hotels 2026 list been published yet?

No. The World's 50 Best Hotels ceremony for 2026 is scheduled for Paris in September 2026, so the official order does not exist yet at the time of writing. Anything published online before that date claiming to be the final list is either last year's result recirculated or a guess. What you are reading here is my own elite tier, scored independently, not the awards order.

- ### Who organises the World's 50 Best Hotels list?

The list is produced by the same organisation behind The World's 50 Best Restaurants, using a panel of anonymous voters drawn from travel writers, hoteliers and frequent guests across different regions. I am not on that panel and I have no visibility into their ballots. My rankings in this guide come from stays I have paid for or been hosted on, scored against my own criteria.

- ### How is your LHC elite tier different from the official awards ranking?

The official list is a single vote count from an anonymous international panel and changes on a schedule I cannot predict. My LHC score out of 10 is one editor's judgement of a specific stay, covering the room, the service, the food and whether the nightly rate felt fair for what I received. Treat the two as separate exercises. I would not be surprised if my order and the eventual awards order diverge on several names.

- ### Which hotel would you put first if you had to choose one?

Passalacqua on Lake Como. It only opened in 2023, it holds twenty four rooms, and the combination of a genuinely restored eighteenth century villa with contemporary service standards is not something I have found matched elsewhere at the same intensity. It is also the hardest of the ten to get into, which tells you something about demand.

- ### Are the rates in this guide accurate?

Every rate in this article was checked on 24 August 2026 for a comparable entry level double or king room in low occupancy shoulder dates, converted to US dollars where needed. Rates at this level move constantly with season, currency and event calendars, so treat these as a reference point rather than a quote, and always check live pricing before booking.

- ### Should I book through Booking.com or direct with the hotel for properties at this level?

For hotels this small, calling or emailing the hotel directly, or going through a Virtuoso or Four Seasons Preferred Partner travel advisor, will often get you a better room category, an early check in or a genuine upgrade that a standard online booking will not. Booking.com and other aggregators are useful for comparing rates and dates quickly, which is why I have linked them here, but at the very top of the market a phone call still earns its keep.

My Verdict

## Passalacqua First, the Official List Second

The Paris ceremony in September 2026 will decide the official order. Until then, twenty four rooms on Lake Como is the hotel I would book first.
