Quick Answer

**Top pick: [Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fid%2Ffour-seasons-resort-bali-at-sayan.html), from about $1,050 a night.** Book [Four Seasons Sayan](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fid%2Ffour-seasons-resort-bali-at-sayan.html) for a first ultra luxury trip to Bali. It has the better arrival, the better spa programming, the more memorable food at Sokasi, all of Ubud's culture on the doorstep, and it runs roughly 25 percent cheaper a night. Book [Bvlgari Resort Bali](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fid%2Fbulgari-resort-bali.html) from about $1,400 if a private pool in every villa, an ocean horizon and a 45 minute airport transfer are what you are actually buying, which is why it takes so many honeymoons. With ten nights, do four at Bvlgari then five at Sayan.

✦ Quick Answer

Overall winner [Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan](#root). Honeymoon and private pool winner [Bvlgari Resort Bali](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fid%2Fbulgari-resort-bali.html). Family winner Sayan. Shortest transfer Bvlgari. Best single meal Sokasi at Sayan. Best restaurant Il Ristorante Luca Fantin at Bvlgari.

These are the two hotels that come up whenever somebody with a real budget asks where to stay in Bali, and almost every article about them is a photo gallery with a paragraph each. Condé Nast reviews them separately and beautifully, but separately is the problem: nobody tells you what the choice actually costs, what you give up, or which one suits the trip you are taking.

So this is the version I wanted when I was making the same decision. Both properties reviewed in full with the current 2026 rates, every villa category and what the jump between them buys, the restaurants ranked against each other, the spa programmes compared properly, the real all in cost of seven nights for two, and a scorecard across twelve criteria so you can see where each one wins rather than being told one of them is "the best hotel in the world" and left to work out the rest.

The short version: they are not competitors so much as two different holidays sold at similar altitude. One is a jungle sanctuary 300 metres above a sacred river with the island's cultural heart ten minutes away. The other is an Italian villa estate on a 150 metre limestone cliff with nothing in front of it but the Indian Ocean.

### How I judged them

Four tests, applied identically. **The thing you cannot get elsewhere:** both have white marble and a butler, so what does this one own outright. **The daily rhythm:** what breakfast, mid afternoon and sunset actually feel like, because that is 80 percent of a stay. **Total cost, not rate:** room, 21 percent tax and service, transfers, and what dinner really runs. **Who it fails:** every hotel is wrong for somebody, and saying so is the only useful part of a comparison.

Rates are entry category shoulder season numbers taken from Booking.com in August 2026. Bali pricing swings hard between April and August and again over Christmas, so treat every figure as a floor and check live rates for your dates.

If you take one line from this page: **Sayan sells you Bali, Bvlgari sells you a view of it.** At Sayan the resort is a way into the island, and half of what you remember happens off the property. At Bvlgari the property is the point, and leaving it feels like a downgrade. Both are correct answers to different questions.

Sayan takes six, Bvlgari takes five, one is a genuine tie. What matters is not the count but which rows you personally care about, so read the rows rather than the total.

01 of 02 · Sayan, Ubud · above the Ayung River

### Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan

from about $1,050 a night in shoulder season, verify live

The arrival is the thing everybody tells you about and for once the hype is accurate. You leave the car, cross a narrow footbridge and step onto an enormous elliptical lotus pond floating above the jungle, with the Ayung River audible somewhere below. Nothing of the resort is visible from up there. It only unfolds as you descend three levels to a reception with a 180 degree view over rice paddies and the river gorge. John Heah designed the roof as a rice bowl offered to the gods, and 25 years on it still lands.

There are 18 suites in the main building and 39 villas of one, two and three bedrooms scattered down the hillside. The villas follow the same logic as the main building: you arrive at the top, at a private lily pond and meditation terrace, then descend to an open sided living pavilion with a plunge pool flanked by the bedrooms. The material palette is teak, hand loomed textiles and thatch, so you always know you are in Bali rather than in a generic five star suite.

Food is where Sayan quietly separates itself. Breakfast at Ayung Terrace, hanging over the gorge, is the best meal of the day, and the modern Indonesian menu holds up at dinner with satay lilit and red snapper in dabu dabu. Riverside is a poolside grill by day and a bistronomy menu at night. But the one to book before you arrive is Sokasi, an eight seat wooden pavilion where a chef cooks a seven course Balinese feast in front of you: bebek betutu, duck wrapped in palm leaf and roasted twelve hours underground, and babi guling, suckling pig stuffed with cassava leaf and thousand spice paste over a coconut husk fire.

The spa is not a spa so much as a programme. Treatment rooms open to the river, there is a private Spa Villa with its own plunge pool over a lotus pond, and the signature is a two hour chakra ceremony that runs through smoke, singing bowls and a long lemongrass and vetiver massage. Add the Sacred Nap in the bamboo yoga bale, where you sleep suspended in a fabric cocoon to singing bowls, and sessions with traditional healers who the spa can arrange, and you have something no other Bali resort offers at this level.

Then there is everything outside. A rafting pull out on the Ayung right by Riverside, so you walk from the river to your room still dripping. Sunrise on Mt Batur. Water temples that are not on the coach circuit. A downhill bike ride through tangerine groves and rice villages. Ubud town is ten minutes away on a good day, which is the caveat: the roads in and out are notoriously clogged and ten minutes becomes thirty five at the wrong hour.

What it does that the other cannot

- Architect John Heah designed the lotus pond roof as a rice bowl offering, and it has aged 25 years without dating
- 57 keys across suites and villas, so it stays quiet even at full occupancy
- Sokasi chef's table runs a limited number of nights each week and seats only eight
- Sacred Nap in the bamboo yoga bale, plus traditional healer sessions arranged through the spa
- Its own rafting pull out on the Ayung, so you walk from the river straight to your room

Where it falls down

- No beach and no ocean view. The nearest proper swimming coast is 90 minutes away
- Private pools are villa categories only. Main building suites share the two tier river pool and the plunge pools by the spa
- The road into Ubud is genuinely clogged. A 10 minute drive becomes 35 at the wrong hour
- Steps and levels everywhere, by design. Flag mobility needs at booking
- Ubud is hotter, wetter and more humid than the Bukit, and the rainy season bites harder here

**Rooms:** 18 suites in the main building plus 39 one, two and three bedroom villas

**Best for:** Jungle immersion, serious wellness and the best arrival sequence of any hotel in Asia

**Getting there:** about 90 minutes from Denpasar airport in normal traffic, 10 to 40 minutes into Ubud town

02 of 02 · Uluwatu, Bukit Peninsula · on a 150 metre limestone cliff

### Bvlgari Resort Bali

from about $1,400 a night in shoulder season, verify live

Bvlgari Bali is the first hotel the Italian jewellery house ever built and it remains the flagship. It sits at the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula on a 150 metre limestone cliff, and everything about the design pushes you towards the drop. The public spaces are Balinese stone and dark timber with Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel's restraint over the top of it, so it reads Italian without ever pretending it is not in Indonesia.

All 59 villas have a private pool. Not a plunge pool in a premium tier, an actual pool in every villa, inside a walled garden with its own pavilion. That single fact is why so many honeymoons end up here, because it means the photograph you booked is guaranteed rather than dependent on which category you could afford. Above the villas sit five mansions of three and five bedrooms with their own staff, which is where the eye watering rates live.

Il Ristorante Luca Fantin is the reason food critics take the property seriously. It is an outpost of the Michelin starred Tokyo room, with Italian produce flown in against local reef fish, and it is the most technically accomplished cooking on the island. Sangkar covers Indonesian regional food competently rather than memorably. Il Bar, a circular pavilion cantilevered on the cliff edge, serves the best negroni view in Southeast Asia and is worth a visit even if you sleep elsewhere.

The beach is real but small, a private cove reached by an inclinator that drops 150 metres down the cliff face. The surf below is serious Bukit water rather than a swimming pool with sand, which matters if you are travelling with children. Uluwatu Temple with its sunset Kecak dance is fifteen minutes away, and the beach clubs of the Bukit are all within half an hour.

What you give up is the island. Uluwatu is dry limestone scrub, beautiful in a stark way and hammered by trade winds from June to September. There is no rice terrace, no river, no healer down the lane. Cultural programming exists but it is a curated add on rather than the thing outside the gate. You are buying the cliff, the pool and the privacy, and at $1,400 upwards you are paying full price for them.

What it does that the other cannot

- The first resort the Italian house ever built, open since 2006 and still its flagship
- Private pool in all 59 villas, not a selected category, which is rare at any price
- Il Ristorante Luca Fantin brings the Michelin starred Tokyo kitchen's cooking to the cliff
- Il Bar sits on the cliff edge and is the best sundowner seat in Indonesia
- 45 minutes from the airport, so you can land and be in the pool before dinner

Where it falls down

- Rack rates are the highest on the island, and mansions run past $10,000 a night
- The Bukit is dry, scrubby and windy from June to September. It is not tropical Bali
- The beach is small, the surf is serious and the inclinator queues at midday
- Cultural programming is thin next to Ubud. Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak are the local set pieces
- Adults skew heavy. It works with children but it is not built around them

**Rooms:** 59 ocean view villas plus five mansions, every one with a private pool

**Best for:** Private pool villas, ocean horizons and Italian design at full volume

**Getting there:** about 45 minutes from Denpasar airport, 90 minutes to two hours to Ubud

## Rooms, Villas and What the Upgrade Buys

This is the table nobody publishes, and it is the one that decides the booking. At Sayan the meaningful jump is from suite to villa, because that is where you get a private pool. At Bvlgari every category already has a pool, so you are paying purely for how close to the cliff edge you sit.

✦ Booking Tip

At Sayan, if a private pool matters, the garden villa at about $1,400 is the efficient buy: it is the same villa architecture as the river categories for several hundred dollars less a night, and you are in the pool rather than looking at the river anyway. At Bvlgari the ocean view villa is the value line, because the cliff villa premium buys about ten metres of proximity.

## Dining, Restaurant by Restaurant

One practical difference: Ubud has a serious independent restaurant scene, so at Sayan you can eat off property for a fraction of the cost and eat well. Uluwatu does not, beyond beach clubs and a handful of cliff restaurants, so at Bvlgari you will eat in most nights and your food bill will roughly double as a result. Factor that into the rate comparison before you decide which is expensive.

## Spa and Wellness, Compared Honestly

Both spas are excellent by any normal standard. The difference is that Bvlgari runs a superb luxury hotel spa and Sayan runs a wellness programme that happens to include a spa.

### Four Seasons Sayan

Treatment rooms open to the river, with Balinese and river stone massage and rainforest lymphatic facials on the standard menu. Outdoor heated spa pools, sauna and steam. The upgrade worth paying for is the private Spa Villa, an open air treatment room over a lotus pond with its own plunge pool, which turns a massage into an afternoon. The signature two hour chakra ceremony runs a Balinese smoke ritual, singing bowls and a slow lemongrass, ginger and vetiver massage. Beyond treatments there is the Sacred Nap in the bamboo yoga bale, anti gravity yoga, and sessions the spa can arrange with local energy healers, which is the part guests write home about.

### Bvlgari Bali

A polished cliff garden spa with the expected Italian brand products, strong therapists and couples suites built for exactly the honeymoon audience the resort attracts. What it does not have is programming: no healer network, no ritual with a name people remember, no bale where you nap in a cocoon. If wellness is a nice extra, this is more than enough. If wellness is the reason for the trip, Sayan wins, and [COMO Shambhala Estate](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fid%2Fcomo-shambhala-estate.html) up the valley beats both.

## Ubud or Uluwatu, Which Half of Bali Do You Want

This is the real decision and the hotels almost follow from it. Ubud sits inland in the highlands: river gorges, rice terraces, temples, art, healers, cool nights and heavy rain. Uluwatu is the Bukit Peninsula in the far south: limestone cliffs, world class surf, beach clubs, dry scrub and wind. They are 90 minutes to two hours apart, and that drive is unpleasant enough that day tripping between them ruins a day.

The gap is bigger than the rate difference suggests, roughly $3,500 to $4,500 across a week, because Bvlgari's captive dining pushes your food bill up while Sayan's Ubud location pulls it down. That extra money buys another three nights at [Hoshinoya Bali](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fid%2Fhoshinoya-bali.html) or upgrades you two categories at Sayan.

## Who Should Book Which

### Book Four Seasons Sayan if…

- This is your first ultra luxury trip to Bali
- You want the island, not only the resort
- Wellness, healers and cultural programming matter
- You are travelling with children or as a family group
- You want the most memorable single dinner of the trip
- You would rather spend the difference on more nights

### Book Bvlgari Bali if…

- A private pool in your villa is non negotiable
- It is a honeymoon and privacy is the point
- You want an ocean horizon rather than a jungle valley
- You have four nights or fewer and cannot lose one to a transfer
- You want the best restaurant on the island on site
- You have done Ubud before and want the other Bali

## The Ten Night Split Stay, In the Right Order

If the budget stretches, do both. The order matters more than people realise, and almost everybody does it backwards.

1. **Nights 1 to 4, Bvlgari Bali.** It is 45 minutes from the airport, so you are in your own pool within an hour of landing rather than sitting in Denpasar traffic while jet lagged. Do nothing for two days. Il Bar at sunset, the beach by inclinator, one dinner at Il Ristorante, one cliff edge dinner, Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak on the fourth evening.
2. **Day 5, transfer.** Two hours north with a stop. Break it at Taman Ayun or the Jatiluwih rice terraces so the drive is part of the trip rather than a loss.
3. **Nights 5 to 9, Four Seasons Sayan.** By now you are rested and you want to do things. Sokasi on the first available night. Mt Batur at sunrise. Rafting on the Ayung straight back to your villa. The chakra ceremony and the Sacred Nap. One evening in Ubud town for dinner off property. A morning at the water temples before the coaches.
4. **Night 10, near the airport if you are on a dawn flight.** Otherwise take the last night at Sayan and accept a very early car.

✦ Editor's Note

Doing Bvlgari first also means the cheaper property is the last impression, and oddly the whole trip feels better value that way. Reverse the order and Sayan reads as the compromise, which it very much is not.

## What Nobody Tells You About Either

**Tax and service is 21 percent and it is not in the headline rate.** On a seven night stay that is well over $1,500 at Sayan and over $2,000 at Bvlgari. Budget it from the start.

**Ubud traffic is worse than any article admits.** Sayan is ten minutes from town in theory. Between four and seven in the evening it can be thirty five. Eat early or eat on property.

**Both properties are built on slopes.** Sayan descends three levels from arrival and the villas descend again. Bvlgari runs along a cliff with steps and an inclinator. Buggies exist at both, but flag mobility needs when you book rather than on arrival.

**Sokasi sells out.** It seats eight and runs limited nights. Request it in the same email as your room reservation. Guests who wait until check in routinely miss it, and it is the best meal on either property.

**Wine is punishing in Indonesia.** Import duty means a mid range bottle lands at three to four times what you would pay at home. Drink the cocktails, which are excellent at both, or drink local Hatten if you must have wine.

**The Bvlgari beach is not a beach holiday.** It is a small private cove below a 150 metre cliff with real surf. If you want to swim for hours, the Bukit is not your peninsula and neither is Ubud. Look at [all inclusive resorts](/travel-guides/best-luxury-all-inclusive-resorts-2026) or the Maldives instead.

**Neither is the best value in Bali.** They are the best two hotels, which is a different claim. My [best luxury hotels in Bali guide](/travel-guides/best-luxury-hotels-bali-2026) covers the properties that beat both on price per night.

## Frequently Asked Questions

- ### Which is better, Four Seasons Bali at Sayan or Bvlgari Resort Bali?

Four Seasons Sayan wins overall for a first ultra luxury trip to Bali. It has the better arrival, deeper wellness programming, more to do, more culture on the doorstep and it costs roughly 25 percent less per night. Bvlgari Resort Bali wins if a private pool in every villa, an ocean horizon and a short airport transfer are non negotiable, which is why it takes so many honeymoons. Neither is a bad booking. They are selling two different holidays.

- ### What does each hotel actually cost in 2026?

Four Seasons Sayan starts around $1,050 a night for a one bedroom suite in shoulder season, about $1,400 for a garden villa with a private plunge pool and around $2,600 for a two bedroom villa. Bvlgari Resort Bali starts around $1,400 for an ocean view villa, about $2,100 for a cliff villa and past $10,000 for the mansions. Indonesian tax and service adds roughly 21 percent to both. A realistic seven night trip for two lands at $11,500 to $13,500 at Sayan and $15,000 to $18,000 at Bvlgari.

- ### Does Four Seasons Bali at Sayan have private pools in every room?

No. The 39 villas have private plunge pools. The 18 suites in the main building do not, and instead use the two tier pool down by the Ayung River and the whirlpool plunge pools beside the spa. If a private pool matters to you, book a garden villa or above, or book Bvlgari where all 59 villas include one.

- ### Which hotel is better for a honeymoon in Bali?

Bvlgari Resort Bali, narrowly. Every villa has a private pool and a walled garden, the cliff edge dinner setups are genuinely special, and the sunset over the Indian Ocean is the postcard most couples came for. Four Seasons Sayan is the better honeymoon if your idea of romance is jungle silence, a river below the terrace and a two hour chakra ceremony rather than a photograph.

- ### Which is better for families with children?

Four Seasons Sayan, comfortably. Two and three bedroom villas price far better per bedroom than a Bvlgari mansion, the kids club and cultural programme are strong, and rafting, cycling through the rice fields and Mt Batur at sunrise all run from the property. Bvlgari sits on a 150 metre cliff above serious surf, which is an ongoing supervision problem with small children.

- ### How far apart are the two hotels?

About 90 minutes to two hours by car, depending on traffic through Denpasar. Bvlgari is roughly 45 minutes from the airport, Four Seasons Sayan is roughly 90. Arrange transfers through your hotel rather than hailing a car on arrival.

- ### Can I do both on one trip?

Yes, and it is the best version of a ten night Bali trip. Do four nights at Bvlgari first because it is close to the airport and you will want the pool and the beach while you are jet lagged, then five nights at Sayan for the culture, the wellness and the food, with one night near the airport if you have an early flight. Doing it in that order also means the more expensive property is not the last impression, which is how the trip feels better value.

- ### Is Four Seasons Sayan really the best hotel in the world?

It topped Travel + Leisure's reader survey in 2024, which measures how much guests loved a stay rather than any objective standard. I would not book anything on a reader poll alone. What holds up on the ground is the arrival, the food at Sokasi, the spa programming and the staff retention. Several people who helped me had worked there for over a decade, and it shows.

- ### What is Sokasi and is it worth booking?

Sokasi is an eight seat wooden pavilion at Four Seasons Sayan where a chef cooks a seven course Balinese menu in front of you on a grill. The bebek betutu, a duck wrapped in palm leaf and roasted 12 hours in an underground clay oven, and the babi guling, spit roasted suckling pig, are the reason to go. It runs a limited number of nights per week and seats eight, so ask for it when you reserve the room, not when you arrive.

- ### When is the best time to visit Bali for either hotel?

May, June and September. You get dry season weather without the July and August peak in rates and crowds. April and October are the value months and still mostly dry. Avoid December and January, when you pay the highest rates of the year for the wettest weather. Uluwatu is drier than Ubud year round but takes strong trade winds from June to September.

- ### Which hotel has better food?

Bvlgari has the better restaurant and Sayan has the better meal. Il Ristorante Luca Fantin is the most technically accomplished kitchen in Bali, an outpost of the Michelin starred Tokyo room. But the seven course chef's table at Sokasi is the dinner people still talk about a year later, and Ayung Terrace's breakfast over the gorge beats anything Bvlgari serves before noon.

- ### Do I need a car at either hotel?

No, and I would not hire one. Both resorts run drivers and the Ubud road network is not somewhere you want to learn Balinese traffic. From Sayan a car and driver for a day is roughly $50 to $70 and covers Mt Batur, the water temples and the rice terraces. From Bvlgari you mostly stay put, with the odd run to Uluwatu Temple or a Bukit beach club.
