# The 10 best luxury hotels in New York, ranked for 2026.

Ten Manhattan hotels across the Upper East Side, Midtown, Tribeca, SoHo, Hudson Yards and NoMad, ranked on the things that actually change a trip: how big the room really is, whether the spa is a spa, how far you walk, and what it costs in the month you want to go.

## New York month by month

Temperatures are daytime highs in Manhattan. Shading reflects hotel demand rather than weather: late September through October and the first three weeks of December are the most expensive weeks of the year, while January, February and late August are the cheapest. Rates checked August 2026.

## How to choose a hotel in Manhattan

**The neighbourhood decides the trip, not the star rating.** New York has more five star beds than anywhere in the world, which means the badge tells you almost nothing. What tells you something is which twelve blocks you wake up in. A suite over the Central Park treeline and a cast iron loft in SoHo are two different holidays sold at the same price, and picking the wrong one costs you an hour a day in traffic.

**Uptown is quiet, old and early.** The Upper East Side and Central Park South are where the museums, Madison Avenue and the doormen in green canvas are. [The Carlyle](#root), [The Pierre](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-pierre-a-taj.html) and [The Plaza](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-plaza.html) all sit here. The trade is that dinner downtown means a taxi in both directions, and the area closes early by New York standards.

**Midtown is for short trips with fixed appointments.** If you have meetings on Sixth Avenue or a flight out of LaGuardia, staying at [Aman](#root) or [The St. Regis](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fst-regis-new-york.html) on Fifth saves you the thing New York charges most for, which is time. Both are within two minutes of Fifth and Madison shopping and eight of the park.

**Downtown is where the restaurants are.** Tribeca, SoHo and NoMad hold the eating, the galleries and the late nights. [The Greenwich Hotel](#root) gives you privacy and a lantern lit pool, [The Mercer](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-mercer.html) gives you a loft and the best shopping position in the city, and [The Ned NoMad](#root) gives you a members club you would otherwise need an introduction to join.

**Room size is where the money actually goes.** Manhattan rooms are small and expensive, and the gap between categories is bigger than the gap between hotels. Aman starts around 750 square feet, which is exceptional. Most entry level rooms in this guide sit between 300 and 400. If space matters more than address, pay for the next category up rather than moving hotel.

**Check what the view actually is before you pay for it.** Older landmark buildings cannot give you a skyline, and newer towers cannot give you a courtyard. [The Ritz-Carlton NoMad](#root) has floor to ceiling grid views from every room because it is new glass. [The Greenwich Hotel](#root) has almost none, because Tribeca around it is low rise. Neither is a fault, but one of them will disappoint you if you booked expecting the other.

**Wellness is the real dividing line in 2026.** Two hotels here are built around it and the rest are not. [Aman](#root) has 25,000 square feet of spa over three floors. [Equinox Hotel New York](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fequinox-hudson-yards.html) hands you a 60,000 square foot club, cryotherapy and rooms engineered for sleep. Everywhere else, including [The St. Regis](#root), the spa is a small room with a table in it.

**Autumn is the best time and the most expensive.** Late September and October give you clear light, 19 to 25 degrees and the parks turning. They also give you the highest rates of the year alongside December. January and February are cold, cheap and, if you can stand it, the best value trip in this guide by a wide margin.

**The rate you are quoted is not the rate you pay.** New York adds 14.75 percent in state and city tax to every room night, plus an occupancy charge of roughly USD$4 a night, and several hotels then add a destination fee of USD$25 to USD$45 covering wifi, a minibar credit and gym access. Read the fine print before you commit. Between tax and fees, a headline rate can rise by close to 20 percent by the time you check out.

**Getting in from the airport is a decision worth five minutes.** A yellow cab from JFK is a flat USD$70 plus tolls and tip, and takes 45 to 70 minutes to Midtown depending on the hour. LaGuardia is the closest at 20 to 40 minutes and the cheapest of the three. Newark is quickest for Downtown and the Hudson Yards side of Midtown. The sleeper pick is the AirTrain and the LIRR from JFK into Grand Central, around USD$15 and about 40 minutes with no traffic to sit in.

**Tipping is not optional and the staff notice when it is missing.** Bellman, USD$2 to USD$5 a bag. Housekeeping, USD$5 a night, left daily rather than in one lump at the end, because the person who cleaned your room on Tuesday may not be there on Friday. Doorman, a dollar or two for hailing a taxi. Concierge, USD$10 to USD$20 for a difficult reservation and more if it was genuinely impossible without them. In restaurants, 20 percent is the floor and 25 percent is what exceptional service earns.

**Booking direct rarely beats Booking.com here.** Most of these ten match their rates across channels, and on a two or three night stay the chain loyalty programme gives you very little back. Genius pricing and the flexibility of a free cancellation rate usually make Booking.com the cleaner option unless you are chasing status nights with a specific group. Every rate on this page was checked live against the property's own site before publishing, and where direct was cheaper I have said so in the review.

#01 Crown Building · 57th Street at Fifth Avenue · Midtown East

### 01\. Aman New York

From USD$1,800/night

[Aman New York](#root) occupies the Crown Building at 57th and Fifth, and Jean Michel Gathy has done something I did not think was possible on that corner: he has made the city go quiet. The ground floor security team walks you into a private lift and the noise simply stops. The double height lobby is muted stone, brushed metal and open fires, and it feels intimate despite the scale.

Rooms start at close to 750 square feet, which is roughly three normal Manhattan hotel rooms, and every one has a working fireplace. The spa runs to 25,000 square feet over three floors with a 20 metre pool and private spa houses, and it is the reason people book rather than a nice extra. If you want the hotel to be the trip rather than the bed, this is the one.

Key Facts

- Editor's Pick
- 25,000 sq ft spa
- Fireplace in every room
- Rooms from about 750 square feet, the largest entry level rooms in the city
- A working fireplace in every room, almost unheard of in Manhattan
- A 25,000 square foot spa over three floors with a 20 metre pool

**Best for:** The quietest, largest and most expensive rooms in Manhattan

**Watch out:** The most expensive hotel in this guide by a wide margin

> “The fireplace and the silence are what I remember. You forget you are above Fifth Avenue.”

‹›

#02 Madison Avenue at 76th Street · Upper East Side

### 02\. The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

From USD$950/night

[The Carlyle](#root) is the hotel New Yorkers send their parents to and then quietly book themselves. Bemelmans Bar downstairs, with Ludwig Bemelmans' murals and a pianist most nights, is the single best room to drink in on the island, and residents skip the queue that forms outside it by half past six.

Rooms are proper Upper East Side apartments in feel: chintz, real wardrobes, thick walls, a lot of them with park views over the top of the townhouses. It is a three minute walk to the Met and two to Madison Avenue shopping. Book it if you want the version of New York that existed before hotel lobbies became co working spaces.

Key Facts

- Bemelmans Bar
- Old New York
- Museum Mile
- Bemelmans Bar, with guest priority on a room that queues nightly
- Genuine apartment sized rooms with wardrobes rather than rails
- Two minutes from Madison Avenue and three from the Met

**Best for:** Old New York done properly, with the best bar in the city downstairs

**Watch out:** The Upper East Side goes to bed early, so downtown nights mean a taxi both ways

> “We came for Bemelmans and stayed for the doormen. The room felt like a friend's apartment with better sheets.”

#03 Fifth Avenue at 55th Street · Midtown East

### 03\. The St. Regis New York

From USD$1,100/night

[The St. Regis New York](#root) still runs the butler floor by floor, around the clock, and it is not a gimmick. Your butler unpacks, presses whatever creased on the flight and brings coffee to the bedside at whatever hour you name. On a short trip with a dinner to make, that saves you an hour you did not know you had lost.

The building is Gilded Age and behaves like it: Waterford chandeliers, hand painted ceilings, silk on the walls, and the King Cole Bar with the Maxfield Parrish mural that invented the Bloody Mary. Rooms are classically European rather than modern, and if you want concrete and pale oak you will find it stuffy. Two minutes from Fifth and Madison shopping.

Key Facts

- Butler service
- King Cole Bar
- Fifth Avenue
- Butler service on every floor, twenty four hours, included in the rate
- The King Cole Bar, one of the great hotel bars anywhere
- Ninety seconds from Fifth Avenue and eight from Central Park

**Best for:** Twenty four hour butler service and the best traditional address in Midtown

**Watch out:** No large modern spa, which is a real gap at this price

> “The butler was the difference. Everything pressed, coffee at six, dinner reservation fixed in ten minutes.”

#04 Greenwich Street · Tribeca · Downtown

### 04\. The Greenwich Hotel

From USD$1,050/night

[The Greenwich Hotel](#root), part owned by Robert De Niro, is the most convincing impression of a private house in Manhattan. Reclaimed oak, open fires, velvet sofas, a guest only courtyard that is genuinely silent, and a no photographs rule in the public rooms that the staff actually enforce. That last detail is why certain guests keep coming back.

None of the 88 rooms repeat. You get Tibetan silk rugs, hand glazed tile and heavy beams. Shibui Spa in the basement is built from a 250 year old Japanese farmhouse frame reassembled without nails, lit only by lanterns, around a pool that is the calmest space I have swum in on this island. Locanda Verde on the ground floor is a proper restaurant rather than a hotel one.

Key Facts

- Shibui Spa
- 88 rooms
- No photographs policy
- A no photographs policy in public spaces, and staff who enforce it
- Shibui Spa and the lantern lit pool, unlike anything else in the city
- Eighty eight rooms, all different, all with real materials

**Best for:** Total privacy downtown, with the best hotel pool in New York

**Watch out:** Low inventory and loyal regulars mean it sells out early

> “The courtyard and the spa made it feel like we had left New York without leaving Tribeca.”

‹›

#05 Broadway at 28th Street · Flower District · NoMad

### 05\. The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad

From USD$900/night

[The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad](#root) is the modern counterargument to every hotel above it in this list. It is a new glass tower, which means floor to ceiling views of the grid from every single room, something no landmark building can offer. Interiors are calm cream and bronze with terrazzo bathrooms and huge floral installations softening the lobby.

José Andrés runs the food. Zaytinya on the ground floor does Mediterranean plates, The Bazaar handles the theatrical end, and Nubeluz on the 50th floor pours cocktails against a full circle of city. The Club Lounge is one of the better ones in the brand. Book it if you want the view and the dinner in the same building.

Key Facts

- José Andrés dining
- Nubeluz rooftop
- Skyline from every room
- Floor to ceiling skyline views from every room, not just the suites
- Three José Andrés restaurants and the Nubeluz rooftop under one roof
- A Club Lounge that genuinely covers breakfast and evening food

**Best for:** Skyline views from every room and José Andrés downstairs

**Watch out:** Rates sit at the top of the NoMad market and the glass tower has no old world character

> “We booked for the view and stayed in for dinner three nights running. The 50th floor bar is worth the queue.”

#06 Mercer Street at Prince · SoHo · Downtown

### 06\. The Mercer

From USD$850/night

[The Mercer](#root) more or less invented loft luxury in SoHo, and it has aged better than most of what copied it. Christian Liaigre's lobby, low slung and high ceilinged, functions as an unofficial living room for fashion editors and gallerists, and nobody looks up when you walk in, which is the point.

The rooms are real lofts: exposed brick, tall windows, dark wood, deep marble tubs and no gold trim anywhere. [The Mercer](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-mercer.html) Kitchen downstairs still does sharp American Mediterranean food in a brick vaulted room. It is the best base in the city for shopping and galleries, and the least fussy service in this guide.

Key Facts

- SoHo lofts
- Christian Liaigre
- Fashion crowd
- Genuine loft rooms with tall windows and real daylight
- The best position in the city for SoHo shopping and gallery walking
- Relaxed service that is attentive without ceremony

**Best for:** The original SoHo loft hotel, still the best one

**Watch out:** The gym is off site, and there is no spa

> “Big windows, quiet staff, perfect location. It does not try to impress you and that is why it does.”

‹›

#07 Fifth Avenue at 61st Street · Central Park

### 07\. The Pierre, A Taj Hotel

From USD$800/night

[The Pierre](#root) sits on the corner of Fifth and 61st with Central Park directly across the road, and since Taj took it on the service has become noticeably warmer than the Fifth Avenue norm. Park facing rooms here are cheaper than the equivalent at either neighbour, which is the single best value trade on this stretch.

The building is 1930s and the interiors are traditional without being oppressive. Two Ways is a quiet, low lit bar that locals use, and the Rotunda still gets booked out for afternoon tea. If you want the park view and the doorman without the Plaza's crowds, book here.

Key Facts

- Park views
- Taj service
- Two Ways bar
- Park facing rooms cost less than at comparable Fifth Avenue addresses
- Taj service is warmer and less formal than the Midtown standard
- Directly opposite Central Park, with Madison two streets east

**Best for:** The best value park view on Fifth Avenue

**Watch out:** Interiors are traditional and some categories are due a refresh

> “Park view from the bed for less than the hotels either side of us, and the staff could not have been kinder.”

#08 Fifth Avenue at Central Park South · Central Park

### 08\. The Plaza, A Fairmont Hotel

From USD$950/night

[The Plaza](#root) needs no introduction and that is both its strength and its problem. The French Renaissance building on the corner of Fifth and Central Park South is one of the most recognisable hotels in the world, the Legacy Suites look straight over the park, and children who have read Eloise will lose their minds.

Be clear about what you are buying. The lobby is busy with tea guests and visitors all day, entry level Plaza Rooms face an interior courtyard and are dark, and check in at peak hours can feel processed. Book a park facing category or do not book at all.

Key Facts

- The Palm Court
- Landmark building
- Best for families
- One of the great addresses, directly on Central Park South
- The Palm Court under its stained glass dome for afternoon tea
- Genuinely good with children, which most hotels at this level are not

**Best for:** The most famous address in New York, best with a park facing room

**Watch out:** Entry level Plaza Rooms face a courtyard and are noticeably dark

#09 Hudson Yards · 33rd Street · Midtown West

### 09\. Equinox Hotel New York

From USD$800/night

[Equinox Hotel New York](#root) at Hudson Yards is the only hotel in this guide built around what you do at seven in the morning rather than seven in the evening. Rooms are engineered for sleep: medical grade air filtration, full soundproofing, motorised blackout blinds and CoCo Mat mattresses that hold your temperature. The minibar carries bone broth rather than confectionery.

Staying gets you the whole 60,000 square foot Equinox club below, which means indoor and outdoor pools, a SoulCycle studio, elite personal training, cryotherapy and infrared saunas. Hudson Yards itself is corporate and a little sterile, and dining inside the hotel is limited. You are booking the building's machinery, and it is the best of its kind anywhere.

Key Facts

- 60,000 sq ft gym
- Sleep engineering
- Cryotherapy
- A 60,000 square foot club with indoor and outdoor pools included
- The quietest, darkest rooms in the city for anyone crossing time zones
- Cryotherapy, infrared saunas and serious recovery treatment on site

**Best for:** The best hotel gym and the best engineered sleep in New York

**Watch out:** Hudson Yards feels corporate and empty after office hours

> “I slept better than I do at home and the gym is absurd. The neighbourhood is the weak part.”

#10 Broadway at 28th Street · Johnston Building · NoMad

### 10\. The Ned NoMad

From USD$600/night

[The Ned NoMad](#root) is half hotel, half members club, and staying overnight gets you into the club floors that everybody else needs a membership for. That is the whole proposition and it is a good one at USD$600. The Club Upstairs rooftop puts the Empire State Building at eye level, and there is live music or a DJ somewhere in the building most nights.

The Johnston Building has been dressed in 1920s velvet, dark timber, mosaic and hand painted paper, and it is done well rather than as pastiche. Rooms have clawfoot tubs and vintage desks, though the historic floor plan means the entry categories are tight. Weekends downstairs are loud. That is either the reason to book or the reason not to.

Key Facts

- Members club access
- Live music nightly

## New York hotels FAQ

- ### What is the best luxury hotel in New York City?

Aman New York is my pick for 2026. Rooms start at close to 750 square feet with a working fireplace, and the 25,000 square foot spa over three floors has no equal in Manhattan, from around USD$1,800 a night. If you want traditional New York rather than modern calm, book The Carlyle. If you want the best value at this level, book The Ned NoMad from around USD$600.

- ### Which neighbourhood should I stay in in Manhattan?

Match the area to the trip. The Upper East Side and Central Park South give you museums, Madison Avenue and quiet evenings, at The Carlyle, The Pierre and The Plaza. Midtown East is best for Fifth Avenue shopping and short business trips, at Aman and The St. Regis. Downtown, meaning Tribeca, SoHo and NoMad, is where the restaurants, galleries and late nights are, at [The Greenwich Hotel](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-greenwich.html), [The Mercer](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-mercer.html), The Ned NoMad and the Ritz-Carlton NoMad.

- ### How much does a luxury hotel in New York cost per night?

Expect USD$600 to USD$850 for the strongest value at this level, meaning The Ned NoMad, [Equinox Hotel New York](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fequinox-hudson-yards.html), The Pierre and [The Mercer](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fthe-mercer.html). USD$900 to USD$1,100 covers The Plaza, The Carlyle, the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, The Greenwich Hotel and The St. Regis. Aman New York starts around USD$1,800. Rates checked August 2026 and they climb sharply in September, October and December.

- ### Are there luxury hotels in New York under USD$700 a night?

Yes, but only just. The Ned NoMad starts around USD$600 and gives you access to its members club floors, which is the best value in this guide. [Equinox Hotel New York](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fus%2Fequinox-hudson-yards.html) starts around USD$800 and includes the 60,000 square foot club below it. Everything else on this list sits above USD$800 in most months, and above USD$1,000 in autumn.

- ### When is the best time to visit New York?

Late September and October is the best window of the year: 19 to 25 degrees, clear light and the parks turning. Late April and May is the next best, warm without the summer humidity. July and August are hot, humid and the least pleasant months to walk the city, which is also why August is one of the cheapest. January and February are cold and by far the cheapest, and December is expensive because of the holidays.

- ### When are New York hotel rates cheapest?

January and February, once the holidays have cleared, are the cheapest weeks of the year, often forty percent below the autumn rate. Late August is the second cheapest, because the humidity empties the city. The most expensive periods are late September through October, the first three weeks of December, and any week with a major convention at the Javits Center, so check that calendar before you fix dates.

- ### Which New York hotel has the best spa?

Aman New York, without much argument. Twenty five thousand square feet over three floors, a 20 metre pool and private spa houses you can book for the day. For something quieter and stranger, Shibui Spa at The Greenwich Hotel is built from a 250 year old Japanese farmhouse frame and lit only by lanterns. For performance recovery rather than treatments, Equinox Hotel New York has cryotherapy and infrared saunas alongside its 60,000 square foot club.

- ### Which New York hotel is best for families?

The Plaza, provided you book a park facing category rather than the courtyard facing Plaza Rooms. It is genuinely set up for children, the Central Park South position means the zoo and the carousel are a short walk, and afternoon tea in the Palm Court is a fixture. The Pierre is the calmer alternative one block up, with park views at a lower rate.

- ### Is Aman New York on Booking.com?

No. Aman does not distribute this property through Booking.com, and I checked the URL directly in August 2026. The link in the Aman section runs a New York search on Booking.com so you can compare it against the alternatives, and you book the hotel itself through Aman directly. Every other hotel in this guide links to its exact Booking.com property page.

- ### Does Luxury Hotel Compare earn commission from these bookings?

Yes. I earn a small commission through Booking.com's affiliate programme when you book through my links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the ranking, and no hotel can pay for placement on this site. You pay exactly the same price as booking direct.

- ### Which hotel is best for a first time visit to New York?

The Plaza with a park facing category is the classic first visit hotel. Central Park South puts you inside every film that made you want to come, walking distance to the zoo, Fifth Avenue, Broadway and the shops of Midtown, and the building itself is part of the trip. If your idea of a first visit is a modern skyline and rooftop dining, book the Ritz-Carlton NoMad. Both take you within twenty minutes on foot to the parts of the city you will already recognise.

- ### Do New York luxury hotels charge a resort or destination fee?

Several do. Expect USD$25 to USD$45 per night on top of the room rate at some hotels covering wifi, a minibar credit and gym access, which are all things you would assume were included at this level. The 14.75 percent state and city tax and the small nightly occupancy tax always apply on top. Check the small print before you book because the headline rate can rise by close to 20 percent by the time you check out. Booking.com displays the final price with taxes and fees on the confirmation screen so you can compare like for like.

- ### Which New York hotel has the best restaurant?

Locanda Verde at The Greenwich Hotel is the one New Yorkers would pick, and it is a proper restaurant that happens to sit inside a hotel rather than a hotel restaurant. The three José Andrés rooms at the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, Zaytinya on the ground floor and The Bazaar on the second, give you the most range in one building. The Mercer Kitchen still holds up in SoHo. For hotel dining as theatre, The Palm Court at The Plaza remains the room to book afternoon tea in.
