Immigration at the wrong time of day can run to forty minutes on its own, and the gates are a long walk beyond it. Every drawback below comes from either the hotel's own published detail or a pattern in recent guest reviews, and I have said which. One structural note before the list. Bangkok hotels do not divide into good and less good so much as into river and rail, and that single choice shapes your whole trip. The ranking says so where it matters, and there is a section below that sets out exactly what the river costs you in minutes. 01\. The Authors' Wing is the surviving original building. The Garden Wing followed in 1958 and the River Wing tower, where most guests now sleep, went up in 1976. There are 331 rooms and 60 suites across the three, and a 4.8 on TripAdvisor from 6,486 reviews, the largest review count on this page. Twelve places to eat and drink is the number that separates it from everything else here. Le Normandie is the fine dining room, now under Anne Sophie Pic. The China House by Chef Fei does Cantonese, Lord Jim's does seafood, and Baan Phraya and Sala Rim Naam cover Thai, the second across the water with a dance performance. Add Ciao Terrazza, The Verandah, the Riverside Terrace, The Bamboo Bar for jazz and The Authors' Lounge for tea. The Oriental Spa sits in a teak house on the Thonburi bank with 18 treatment rooms, reached by the hotel's own boat. On this side there are two pools, tennis courts, a Muay Thai studio and a yoga house. Book the River Wing and not the old wings. The standard here is a Deluxe or Chao Phraya room of about 40 square metres, redone by Jeffrey Wilkes with lotus motif rugs, teak and a gilded boat headboard, almost every one facing the water. The Authors' and Garden Wing rooms are larger, quieter and more colonial, and also further from the lifts and older in the places that matter. Sleep in the tower and buy the history back with an afternoon tea in the Authors' Lounge, which costs a fraction of the room difference. The drawback is the one every river hotel shares. Saphan Taksin BTS is about a kilometre south, a walk nobody makes in the heat, so you are on a boat and then a train, or in a taxi that can take an hour going east at six in the evening. The other honest point is age: 149 years shows in the plumbing and the corridors of the older wings, and next to Capella the room product is warm rather than sharp. The whole hotel is arranged so that the water is the view from everywhere A 61 square metre entry room on the water, and second place in The 50 Best Hotels 2026 Capella opened in 2020 with 101 rooms, suites and villas on Charoen Krung Road, next door to the Four Seasons, and has spent the years since climbing lists. It was placed third in The World's 50 Best Hotels 2025 and second in The 50 Best Hotels 2026, and it holds a 4.9 on TripAdvisor from 1,040 reviews, the highest score in this guide. Every single room faces the river. The arithmetic of the rooms wins the argument. The entry level Riverfront is 61 square metres, larger than the suites at several hotels charging the same money, in pale stone and blond wood with Thai screens and a terrace on the water. The Verandah categories add a plunge pool; seven villas at the water's edge add a garden and a private pool. Cote by Mauro Colagreco, from the chef behind Mirazur, is the Michelin starred dining room; Phra Nakhon is the Thai restaurant; Stella is the bar and patisserie; and check in happens sitting down in a guests only Living Room. Auriga Wellness builds its treatment cycle around lunar phases, and there is a pool on the terraced riverside lawn. If you have one dinner here, make it Phra Nakhon rather than Cote. The star is on the French room and the money follows it, but the Thai kitchen is the one guests describe afterwards, and eating Thai food properly is most of the reason to come here. The other piece of advice is about the Culturist: one is assigned to your room rather than to your floor, and they are far more useful booking a longtail boat or a table across town than they are unpacking your case. Give them the whole itinerary on day one. Two things hold it at second rather than first. With 101 rooms and a place near the top of the world list, dates are hard and the rate has followed the ranking up; USD$700 is the highest entry rate here, although the hotel's own site still publishes a range of USD$500 to USD$700, so the shoulder weeks exist. And it is the least Thai feeling of the five river hotels, closer to a very good modern resort than to a Bangkok institution. The hotel is low and spread out rather than stacked Two hundred metres of open riverfront and a boat to the BTS every thirty minutes This opened on 17 December 2020 and is the only hotel in central Bangkok that behaves like a resort. Jean Michel Gathy laid it out low and wide rather than stacking it, so 299 rooms spread across a site holding 200 metres of open river frontage, the longest on this stretch. A lot of rooms therefore look at the water at eye level instead of from the twentieth floor. Standard rooms run from about 50 square metres, pale and restrained, with a low sofa under the window, a long marble bathroom and either the river or the garden courtyard behind full height glass. The Urban Wellness Centre runs to more than 2,500 square metres and holds the spa, the gym and a 30 metre lap pool, with a separate riverside infinity pool on top of that. This is the only hotel here where you can swim lengths properly. Six places to eat and drink: Yu Ting Yuan for Cantonese, designed by Gathy himself, Riva del Fiume for Italian, Brasserie Palmier for French, Cafe Madeleine for pastry, The Lounge for tea, and BKK Social Club, one of the better hotel bars in Asia. The boat is the thing to plan around and almost nobody tells you the hours. The hotel runs a free shuttle from its own pier every thirty minutes to Saphan Taksin BTS and every sixty minutes to ICONSIAM, daily from 7am to 10pm, and the departures between 7am and 10am have to be booked. Book the morning slot the night before if you have anything early, because that is the one that fills. Saphan Taksin exit 4 is a fifteen minute walk if you miss it, which the hotel says itself, and which is a fifteen minute walk in thirty four degrees. Two honest marks against it. The Charoenkrung end of the riverside has noticeably less on its doorstep than the Oriental Avenue end, and Siam and Sukhumvit are a long taxi ride, so the last boat at 10pm sets a soft curfew on dinner across town. And BKK Social Club draws a busy outside crowd most evenings, which is good for the bar and less good if you wanted a quiet lobby at nine o'clock. The standard Deluxe is about 50 square metres, which is what several hotels here call a suite, and the tower is built as a shallow W across 37 floors so that every one of its 370 rooms looks at the Chao Phraya rather than at another wing. Cream, dark wood, marble bathroom, separate tub. It is a classic hotel rather than a current one and does not pretend otherwise. The pool is the property's signature and the best in the city: three levels, stepped down through the lawn towards the water, with a sala on each tier so there is shade wherever the sun is. The Peninsula Spa occupies a three storey Thai style villa in the garden, and there are tennis and pickleball courts. Thiptara, the Thai restaurant, sits in a group of restored teak houses reassembled on the bank, and it is the table to book. River Cafe and Terrace is the all day room on the water, Mei Jiang is the Chinese restaurant, and tea happens in the lobby. The boats are why the west bank works at all, and the hours are the best of any hotel here. The free shuttle runs to Taksin pier at Saphan Taksin BTS from 6am to midnight on request, and to ICONSIAM every thirty minutes from 10am to 10.30pm. There are also free tuk tuks to ICONSIAM hourly from 11am to 8pm. Midnight is two hours later than the Four Seasons boat and it changes what you can do with an evening. If you are eating in Thonglor, this is the river hotel that will still take you home on the water. The address is the drawback and it is not a small one. The Thonburi bank puts the entire river between you and the temples, the old city and the BTS, and Saphan Taksin is a fifteen minute walk plus a crossing, which means in practice you never walk it. The interiors are also the most dated of the five river hotels: a June 2026 reviewer put it plainly, saying the rooms are not modern but still well maintained, which is fair. The lowest rate of the ten, with a four floor rooftop upstairs and a BTS you reach indoors Park Hyatt Bangkok opened in 2017 on the upper floors of the Central Embassy tower at 88 Wireless Road, with 222 rooms and suites and a starting rate of about USD$230. That last number is the story. It is the lowest entry rate of the ten hotels here by a wide margin, and it buys you the same BTS station as Rosewood, which starts at nearly twice the money, in a hotel that holds one of the best rooftop venues in the city inside its own building. The rooms are by Yabu Pushelberg and deliberately quiet: warm woods, marble bathrooms, floor to ceiling glass and proper blackout curtains, set against a lot of contemporary Thai art downstairs. Because the hotel begins well above the mall floors, even entry categories have a long view, either over Lumphini Park or across the Wireless Road embassy district. Penthouse Bar and Grill is the headline and it runs to four floors: The Grill, a Chef's Table with its own wine cellar, a cocktail bar, a whisky room, a semi private mezzanine and an open air Rooftop Bar. Embassy Room does Catalan cooking downstairs. The single best thing about this hotel is not in any of that. It connects through Central Embassy directly to Phloen Chit BTS, so you can reach the train without stepping outside, and in March, when the heat and the air are both against you, that is worth more than a pool. Ask for a room facing Lumphini Park rather than the embassy side. And if you are going up to Penthouse, book the Chef's Table or the whisky room rather than turning up at the Rooftop Bar with the crowd, because the rooftop is the busiest and the least interesting of the four floors. The compromise is the pool, and it is a real one. This is a compact urban pool on a terrace level, not a place to spend an afternoon, and after the riverside hotels it will feel like an afterthought. You also arrive through a shopping centre rather than up a driveway. Its 4.6 from 2,197 TripAdvisor reviews is the lowest score in this guide. I have still put it above Rosewood, which has better rooms and a better pool, purely on the arithmetic: the same station, half the rate, and a rooftop you never leave the building for. Inside there are 159 rooms and suites over 30 floors, including 34 suites and studios and three signature Houses at the top, named Nara, Thara and Bannakarn, which are effectively apartments with their own plunge pools and terraces. Entry rooms start at 55 square metres, larger than a great many Bangkok suites, with a sitting area, a carved lattice screen dividing off the bathroom and a full height window in the angled facade. Celia Chu's interiors are warmer and more residential than the glass exterior suggests. Four places to eat and drink: Nan Bei for southern Chinese seafood and Peking duck, Lakorn as the European brasserie, G and O as the organic cafe, and Lennon's on the thirtieth floor, a listening bar built around 6,000 records. Sense, A Rosewood Spa takes the entire sixth floor, and the pool is an indoor outdoor saltwater lap pool on the ninth. The transport is the whole argument. This is the one hotel in the guide with direct access to a BTS station, meaning you step from the building into Phloen Chit without crossing a pavement. Siam is three stops, Asok is four, and across a week that is hours of your life back. Use the pool before eleven in the morning, because there are only so many loungers and they go early. And drink at Lennon's rather than chasing a famous rooftop across town in traffic; it is a better room than the view bars and it is downstairs. What you give up is the water. There is no river and no garden here, and the ninth floor pool, handsome as it is, is small with few loungers and fills on a hot afternoon. At USD$450 you are paying river money for a city tower, and that is only a good trade if your days are actually spent in the city: meetings, Sukhumvit dinners, the Siam shopping district. There are 210 rooms and suites across a Main Wing and a Club Wing on a six acre site at 13/3 South Sathorn Road, in the business and embassy district. The hotel sits at the end of a 200 metre driveway off Sathorn, and that driveway is the reason the traffic noise simply stops. The Deluxe room in the Main Wing is about 47 square metres, in teak, silk and cream, with a deep bathroom and a view over the gardens and reflecting pools rather than the road. Nothing here is fashionable and nothing has dated badly either. The Club Wing is newer and adds lounge access and balcony categories. Seven places to eat and drink: Celadon, the Thai restaurant, stands in its own lotus pond and is among the best hotel Thai kitchens in Bangkok; La Scala is the Italian room; Colonnade does all day food and a famously heavy Sunday brunch; and The ZUK Bar has a shoal of gilded fish hanging from the ceiling. The pool is 25 metres, tiled so dark it reads almost black against the lawn. Take a Main Wing garden room over a Club Wing room unless you specifically want the lounge, because the gardens are what you came for and the Main Wing sits in them. Lumphini MRT is a few minutes on foot and Sala Daeng BTS a little further, so this is the best compromise base in the guide between the river and the city: the Saphan Taksin piers are two or three stops away on the Silom line. Book Celadon on your first night, before you have worked out where else to eat. The low rise plan that makes it peaceful also makes it a walk. Getting from a Main Wing room to Celadon or the pool means crossing courtyards in the open, a pleasure in December and a real effort in April. There are 39 suites and pool villas across three acres of river garden at Thanon Khao in Dusit, north of the old royal city. Three acres of private garden on the Chao Phraya is something none of the bigger river hotels can match. There is no small room. The entry Siam Suite is around 80 square metres over two levels, with black and white tiling, high ceilings, a claw foot or sunken tub and its own courtyard. Ten pool villas add a private plunge pool, the riverside ones a deck on the water. Every room is filled with the family's own antiques rather than bought in decoration, and Bensley's monochrome art deco is either the best thing you have seen or not for you. Chon Thai Restaurant occupies three restored teak houses that once belonged to Jim Thompson, Deco Bar and Bistro is the all day room in a glazed gallery, and Bathers Bar sits by the long riverside pool. Opium Spa is in the basement, and there is a Muay Thai ring. The hotel holds three Michelin Keys. There is a butler for every one of the 39 rooms, and the shuttle boat must be booked by telephone rather than by turning up at the jetty, so book the return leg with the outbound or you will be on a pier in Dusit working out taxi apps. Take a river pool villa over a courtyard one if the budget stretches, because the deck on the water is what people remember. The Grand Palace and Wat Arun are a river trip south, which is the pleasant way to do them. Isolation is the drawback and the hotel does not hide from it. There is no BTS or MRT within walking distance, Dusit has very little going on after dark, and getting anywhere means the boat or a taxi through traffic. At USD$500 you are paying a serious rate for a hotel you cannot easily walk out of in the evening. That is the point, if you have already done the Grand Palace and want a garden and a butler instead. This is the hotel's answer to a garden Thirty four suites starting above the twentieth floor, with a pool on the twenty seventh 137 Pillars Suites opened in 2017 in Sukhumvit Soi 39, occupying the upper levels of a 32 storey tower that also holds a separate residences block. There are only 34 units and not one of them is a standard room. Because the hotel starts above the twentieth floor, every suite has a long view over the Phrom Phong and Thonglor rooftops, which for USD$350 is an unusual thing to be buying in this city. The suites come in four styles named after eras of Thai royal history: Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Thonburi and Rattanakosin. High ceilings, a private bar in the room, a bath with a television set into it, hand woven silk from the Jim Thompson operation down the road, and a balcony you can actually sit on. The pool is the calling card: a 27th floor infinity pool with a cabana lounge and its own bar. Nimitr is the Thai restaurant with a terrace on the top floors, Bangkok Trading Post is the casual all day room at street level, and Baan Borneo Club is the residents' lounge where breakfast is served. The hotel took Green Globe certification in 2026, with an on site herb garden feeding Nimitr. Two practical things. First, check what you are booking: the Residences next door are a separate product from the Suites and they share an entrance, so confirm the wording on the reservation. Second, use the free shuttle down Soi 39 to Phrom Phong BTS rather than walking it. Sukhumvit sois are long, and the shuttle is the difference between arriving at dinner presentable and arriving damp. EmQuartier and Emporium sit at the top of the soi. The honest weakness is that this is a tower in a side street with no river and no grounds, sharing its ground floor with an apartment lobby. There is also a fault that comes up again and again in reviews, a small thing that becomes a daily thing: the lifts run hot. A guest writing in June 2026 described the ride down from above the twentieth floor in a lift with no ventilation as a long time to stand in the heat, and that is not an outlier. At USD$350 for a suite this size with that pool, in the best eating and drinking district in Bangkok, it is still good money. There are 354 rooms and suites on a large low rise site at 155 Ratchadamri Road, including garden pool villas at ground level, and the hotel keeps a garden of roughly six rai in the middle of the shopping district. Deluxe rooms are around 45 square metres and, in the renovated stock, carry a hand painted Thai mural above the bed, teal accents and a view over the gardens or the pool. The garden pool villas are why a lot of people book: single storey, with a terrace and a private plunge pool screened by planting, which almost no other central Bangkok hotel has. Eight places to eat and drink, second only to the Mandarin Oriental here: Shintaro for Japanese, Biscotti for Italian, Spice Market for Thai, Madison for steak, Guilty as the wine bar, the Lobby Lounge for tea under the hand painted murals the hotel is known for, and a bar by the large free form garden pool. Here is the advice that matters more than anything else in this entry. The property is midway through a two phase, fifty million dollar renovation. Phase one ran to November 2025 and delivered renovated guest rooms, the pool and the fitness centre. Phase two runs from May to September 2026, covering the remaining rooms, the villas, the restaurants, the lobby and the ballroom, so as this guide publishes it is in its closing weeks. Ask in writing which phase your room falls in and get a phase one renovated Deluxe confirmed on the booking, not allocated on arrival. Until that work is signed off you are staying on a building site, which means noise during the day and closures you did not plan for. The unrenovated rooms still in rotation read as dated next to Rosewood or Park Hyatt, and the 4.7 score from 5,580 TripAdvisor reviews covers stays on both sides of the work, so it flatters the current experience. Ratchadamri BTS is a short covered walk, Siam two stops and Lumphini Park across the road, a strong position for USD$280. You pick the way you want to get around, and the hotel follows. The BTS and the MRT are fast, cheap and air conditioned, the river boats are lovely and slow, and the roads at six in the evening are neither. Those three facts decide everything. The shortest version: the riverside for the grand hotels and the view, the Siam and Wireless Road corridor if you want to walk to things under cover, Silom and Sathorn for quiet in the centre and the best compromise between river and rail, Sukhumvit for eating and drinking, and Dusit only if you have already done the sightseeing and want a garden instead. One thing to plan for everywhere except the river: the skywalks. The Siam, Ratchaprasong and Wireless Road district is linked by covered walkways that let you cross most of it without touching the street, past Siam Paragon, Central Embassy, the Erawan Shrine and EmQuartier, and in the hot season that is worth real money. Rosewood, Park Hyatt and Anantara Siam all sit on that network. The river hotels have no equivalent, which is the trade the next section is about. Sukhumvit deserves one warning of its own. The line runs the length of it and Asok, Phrom Phong and Thong Lo put you a few stops from Siam and on top of the best independent restaurants and bars in the city, which is why repeat visitors keep coming back to it. But the sois are long. Budget an extra 30 to 45 minutes each way against a Sukhumvit base. Lumphini Park is the city's best green space and the riverside piers at Saphan Taksin are two or three stops away, which makes this the best compromise base between river and city. Best for business travellers and people who want quiet without leaving the centre. ### Siam, Ratchaprasong and Wireless Road Rosewood, Park Hyatt and Anantara Siam sit in this corridor, all within reach of Phloen Chit or Ratchadamri BTS. Siam Paragon, Central Embassy, EmQuartier and the Erawan Shrine are all here, linked by covered skywalks that let you cross the district without touching the street, which in the hot season is worth real money. Best for shoppers and first timers who want to walk to things. ### Rattanakosin and Dusit The old royal city, and where The Siam sits, north of the temples in Dusit. There is no BTS or MRT worth walking to from the riverbank here; the practical routes are the Chao Phraya boats and taxis. Beautiful by day and very quiet after dark. Best for sightseers doing the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, and design led travellers. ## What the glossy lists do not tell you about the Bangkok riverside Five of the ten here are on the Chao Phraya, and they are the famous and the beautiful ones: Mandarin Oriental, Capella, Four Seasons, The Peninsula and The Siam. What no list tells you is the price of the address in minutes. There is no BTS station on the riverbank except Saphan Taksin, so every journey inland is a boat and a change, or a taxi that can take an hour going east at six. Allow thirty to forty five minutes each way against a Sukhumvit base. The walking distances are what the photography hides. Four Seasons is a fifteen minute walk from Saphan Taksin exit 4, the hotel's own figure. The Peninsula is the same walk plus a river crossing, so nobody does it. Capella is about 1.5 kilometres, roughly twenty minutes on foot. The Mandarin Oriental is a kilometre south. The Siam has no station. Compare the other five. Rosewood has direct access to Phloen Chit BTS: leave the building and you are in it. Park Hyatt reaches the same station through Central Embassy, without going outdoors. That is the real division in this guide. If you take the river, book by the boat timetable: the hours decide your evenings. The Four Seasons will not. ## The value pick, and the one I would think hardest about Park Hyatt Bangkok is the value pick and the case is mostly arithmetic. It starts at about USD$230, the lowest entry rate of the ten by a wide margin, and shares a BTS station with Rosewood, which starts at USD$450. Both reach Phloen Chit without a pavement walk. For half the money you get Yabu Pushelberg rooms high above the Central Embassy shopping floors with a long view over Lumphini Park, and four floors of Penthouse Bar and Grill upstairs rather than a taxi to somebody else's rooftop. Take the trade seriously. The pool is a compact urban terrace and cannot live with the Peninsula's three tiers or the Four Seasons lap pool, so if swimming is how you rest, this is the wrong hotel at any price. Its 4.6 from 2,197 TripAdvisor reviews is the lowest score here, and you arrive through a mall, not up a driveway. None of that changes the sums. The one I would think hardest about is Anantara Siam, and it is a question of timing, not quality. It is in the closing weeks of a two phase, fifty million dollar renovation: phase one ran to November 2025 and covered guest rooms, the pool and the gym; phase two has run since May 2026 across the remaining rooms, villas, restaurants and lobby. The garden pool villas are unusual for a central hotel and USD$280 is fair for the position, but the wrong week means noise, closures and a room untouched since the work began. Get a phase one category written into the confirmation. Capella deserves a pause for a different reason. It is the best hotel on this page on room product and priced accordingly at USD$700, and with 101 rooms and second place in The 50 Best Hotels 2026 behind it, availability has gone as you would expect. Its own site still publishes a range starting at USD$500, so the cheaper weeks exist. They are not the weeks most people want to travel. A metered taxi runs roughly THB 350 to 500 plus about THB 75 in expressway tolls and takes 45 to 60 minutes, longer at peak. Take the official rank rather than anyone who approaches you in the hall, insist on the meter, and carry small notes: the tolls are paid in cash at the booths and the driver will ask you for them. The Airport Rail Link is the cheap way in and genuinely good: Phaya Thai in 26 minutes for THB 45, connecting onto the BTS Sukhumvit line, and Makkasan station is a 200 metre walk from Phetchaburi MRT. For 137 Pillars, Rosewood, Park Hyatt or Anantara Siam it is a sensible arrival. For the river, a trap. You reach Phaya Thai with your bags, change onto the BTS, ride the Silom line to Saphan Taksin and still need a boat. Take a car in on arrival and use the free hotel boats afterwards. Hotel cars are comfortable and expensive, and the gap is larger than you expect. The Sukhothai publishes THB 3,000 for a Mercedes E Class and THB 4,500 for a BMW 7 Series one way, against THB 350 to 500 on the meter for the same journey. That is up to ten times the price for the same road at the same speed. Book one if you land at two in the morning with children asleep. Don Mueang handles most low cost flights and is the closer airport for the riverside hotels, about 28 kilometres and 30 minutes to the Four Seasons. A free shuttle bus links the two from 5am to midnight for connecting passengers, which matters if your long haul lands at one and your Thai domestic leaves from the other. Leave more time than the schedule suggests: the two are on opposite sides of the city and the bus sits in the same traffic. ## How this ranking was made Every hotel was checked against the same five things: what the entry room actually is in square metres, what is inside the building rather than nearby, how long it takes to reach a train, what recent reviews complain about repeatedly, and what a standard room costs on comparable dates. Rates are the public sample starting rates in this guide's data file, checked on 18 September 2026 before tax and the 10 per cent service charge, so they compare with each other rather than a booking engine. TripAdvisor scores and review counts were read off each hotel's own review page through archived captures dated January and June 2026, because TripAdvisor refuses direct requests here, and each capture date is recorded against its score. Bangkok's best known rooftop bars mostly belong to hotels not in this guide, and plenty of lists quietly attach them to whichever property is to hand. Vertigo and Moon Bar, Sirocco and Sky Bar, and Octave are excellent and none belongs to a hotel here. The rooftops genuinely inside these hotels are Penthouse Bar and Grill at Park Hyatt, Lennon's at Rosewood, the Nimitr terrace at 137 Pillars and BKK Social Club at Four Seasons. Nothing else. Every photograph here was opened and looked at before publication, and each comes from the property's own site or its brand's press library. Park Hyatt Bangkok took four attempts, because Hyatt's booking site refuses this system outright; its pictures came from Hyatt's own asset library in the end.
