Unlimited data sounds like the premium option and usually is not, because a luxury trip is a trip where you spend most of your day inside a hotel, a restaurant or a car with a driver, all of which have wifi. My actual usage across two week trips sits between 4 GB and 8 GB. Paying $47 for unlimited when you will use 6 GB is paying for reassurance. 02 ## Airalo [Airalo](https://airalo.tpx.lt/XJUpu9hS) is the largest travel eSIM marketplace in the world and the one I default to. It sells local plans for individual countries, regional plans such as Eurolink for 42 European countries and Asialink for 19 Asian markets, and a global Discover plan covering more than 130. Prices start at $4.50 for 1 GB on many destinations, which is less than a single airport coffee and enough to get maps, messages and a car booked on arrival. Country selection is where it separates from Holafly. If your itinerary is Paris, Milan and Zurich over ten days, you buy one Eurolink plan and never think about it again. If it is Tokyo and Kyoto, you buy Moshi Moshi at 3 GB for $8.50. Nothing forces you into an unlimited product for a trip you know is short. That flexibility is worth more than raw speed, because speed on any eSIM is set by the host network rather than the reseller. Activation is the part people worry about and it is genuinely simple. Install the profile at home over wifi, leave it switched off, then enable data roaming on that line when you land. On most destinations that is the only product available, priced from $19 for five days up to $99 for a long stay. Europe Unlimited runs $47 for fifteen days and $64 for thirty across 42 countries, and there are unlimited plans for Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand and the United States. The case for it is real in three situations. The first is a long trip, where a month of unlimited at $64 beats topping up a metered plan four times. The second is a working trip where you cannot predict usage. The third is any destination where you plan to stream, video call daily or run a phone as your only device for weeks. In those cases Holafly removes an anxiety that [Airalo](https://airalo.tpx.lt/XJUpu9hS) does not. The catch is hotspot sharing. On most Holafly destinations tethering is limited to 500 MB a day, which is enough to check email on a laptop and nowhere near enough to work. Given the price premium, that cap is the single biggest reason I do not recommend Holafly to business travellers. The second reservation is that unlimited on many networks means unlimited at reduced speed after a fair use threshold, which varies by country and is not always obvious at checkout. Where Holafly does shine is regions where local data is expensive or plans are stingy. Japan, the United Arab Emirates and the United States all fall into that group. It sells metered plans like [Airalo](https://airalo.tpx.lt/XJUpu9hS), covers roughly 200 destinations, and prices its middle tiers better than either rival. A 10 GB Europe plan runs about $27 and a 20 GB plan about $42, which undercuts the equivalent [Airalo](https://airalo.tpx.lt/XJUpu9hS) tiers by a few dollars once you get past the entry level. The app is the best of the three. Plan expiry, remaining data and top up are all on one screen, and the notification when you cross 80 percent of your allowance actually arrives on time. Nomad also runs frequent promotional credit, so the real price is often below the list price if you buy through the app rather than the website. What holds it back is coverage depth in the places luxury travel goes. In the Maldives, Seychelles and French Polynesia, buy small, expect resort wifi to do most of the work, and top up only if you need to. 06 ## How to Actually Set Up an eSIM Before You Fly Six steps, done at home over wifi the night before. This takes about five minutes and removes every common failure people report on arrival. 1. **Check your phone is eSIM capable and unlocked.** Any iPhone from XR onwards, recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and most flagship Android handsets since 2021 will work. A carrier locked handset will not, and that is the single most common reason an eSIM fails. 2. **Buy the plan that matches your route, not your destination.** One country means a local plan. Three or more means a regional plan. Buying three local plans for a European trip costs roughly double Eurolink. 3. **Install the profile at home on wifi.** Installation needs a data connection and airport wifi is where this goes wrong.
