In one paragraph. The Seychelles is 115 granite and coral islands in the Indian Ocean, where luxury means a private beach rather than an overwater villa. I rate 10 resorts here from about $700 to $2,400 a night. [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fsix-senses-zil-pasyon.html) is where I would spend a first visit.

Quick Answer

**Top pick: [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fsix-senses-zil-pasyon.html), from about $2,000 a night.** [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fsix-senses-zil-pasyon.html) on Félicité is the resort I book most often, because it gives you a private granite island, a pool villa built into the boulders and the best spa in the country at a fifth of the [North Island](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fnorth-island.html) rate. Anantara Maia is the value play at the top end, [Raffles Seychelles](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fraffles-pralin.html) is the family answer on Praslin from about $900, and [Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fdomaine-de-l-39-orangeraie-resort-and-spa.html) puts you on a bicycle on La Digue for about $450. Go in April or October, and book a north facing beach if you travel between June and September.

✦ Quick Answer

Book [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fsix-senses-zil-pasyon.html) for a private granite island at a rate that is not absurd. Book [North Island](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fnorth-island.html) if there is no ceiling. Book [Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fanantara-maia-seychelles-villas.html) for near inclusive luxury twenty five minutes from the airport. Book [Raffles Seychelles](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fraffles-pralin.html) with children. Book [Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fdomaine-de-l-39-orangeraie-resort-and-spa.html) if you want La Digue, a bicycle and change from five hundred dollars.

Most Seychelles lists are a slideshow. Fifteen resorts, one photograph and one paragraph each, no ranking, no rates and no view on which island you should even be standing on. They also skip the three things that decide whether the trip works: seaweed season, inter island transfers and the fact that the beach outside your villa may be unswimmable for four months of the year.

This is the other version. Nine resorts reviewed properly and in order, with what each one costs, what it does that the others cannot and where it falls down. Then the parts a slideshow leaves out: which island suits which trip, the seven beaches actually worth planning around, the monsoon calendar in plain language, where the tortoises and turtles are, how to get between islands without losing two days, and an honest comparison against the Maldives.

### How I ranked them

Three tests. **The setting:** the Seychelles sells granite, forest and beach, so how much of that does the property actually own and can you use it without a boat. **The one thing:** every resort here has a pool villa and good linen, so what does this one have that nothing else does, and can a guest reach it. **Defensible rate:** what you pay against the resort on the next headland once food, drink and transfers are in the total, because half these properties are near inclusive and half are not.

That is why [North Island](#overview) takes the top slot but [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](#overview) is the recommendation, and why a four star on Praslin at $320 sits in the same guide as a $10,000 villa. Rates are indicative for an entry category room in shoulder season, taken from Booking.com in August 2026. Seychelles pricing moves hard with the calendar, so check live rates for your dates.

## Which Island Should You Choose

This is the decision that shapes the holiday, and it comes before the hotel. The Seychelles is one hundred and fifteen islands, but visitors realistically choose between three inhabited ones, two inner island private resorts and the outer atolls. Getting it wrong means paying for a granite island fantasy and landing on a flat coral cay, or booking a private island and discovering you wanted a village and a bicycle.

✦ Booking Tip

The shape that works for a two week trip is four nights on Praslin or La Digue, then seven on a private island or at Desroches. Do the busy island first while you still have energy for boats, bicycles and Vallée de Mai, and finish somewhere you never have to leave. Never book a one night stopover on Mahé at each end. One is enough and two wastes a day of the holiday.

#01 Private island · 30 minutes by helicopter from Mahé

### 01\. [North Island](#overview)

from about $10,000 a night all inclusive, verify live

North Island is the most expensive room night in this guide by a factor of five, and the only one where I think the number is defensible. Eleven villas, a hard cap of twenty two guests, roughly ten staff to every guest, no locks on the villa doors and no clocks anywhere you can see one. You are not sharing an island with three hundred people. You are sharing it with ten other guests and a conservation team.

The story that matters is the rehabilitation. The island was a failed coconut and copra plantation, ecologically wrecked, and a twenty year restoration has brought back Aldabra tortoises, the Seychelles magpie robin and the white eye, plus hundreds of endemic plants. The biologists are on site and they will take you out at dawn. That is the part guests talk about afterwards, more than the villa.

There is no restaurant menu. The kitchen cooks what you want, where you want it, which sounds like marketing until you eat dinner on the beach at Anse d'Est on your third night. William and Catherine honeymooned here in 2011 and the property has been refurbished twice since, most recently after it left Marriott's Luxury Collection in July 2025 and returned to operating independently.

Key Facts

- From about $10,000 a night, fully inclusive of food, drink, most activities and the helicopter
- Eleven villas, 450 square metres each, all beachfront with a private pool
- Twenty year island restoration with Aldabra tortoises and endemic bird reintroduction
- No printed menus. The kitchen cooks to request, anywhere on the island
- Left the Luxury Collection in July 2025 and now operates independently

**Best for:** The most private stay in the Indian Ocean

**Getting there:** Helicopter from Mahé, about 25 minutes

**Watch out:** The rate is genuinely all inclusive, so compare it against a $4,000 villa plus food, drink and transfers before you dismiss it. It is still the most expensive week you will book.

#02 Private island · 15 minutes by boat from La Digue

### 02\. [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](#overview)

from about $2,000 a night, verify live

Félicité is three square kilometres of granite hillside and white sand fifteen minutes off La Digue, and Six Senses has thirty villas on it. This is the resort I recommend most often, because it delivers the private island feeling at roughly a fifth of the North Island rate and it does the one thing the Seychelles does better than anywhere on earth: architecture built around boulders the size of houses.

The villas sit among the rocks rather than on cleared plots, which means genuine privacy without needing a hedge. Every one has a pool. The spa is the most serious wellness operation in the country, with treatment pavilions cut into the hillside and a programme that goes well past the usual massage menu. The house reef off Grand Anse is the best snorkelling of any resort in the inner islands, and you can walk to it.

It is not the resort for anyone who wants a flat beachfront stroll to dinner. The island is steep, buggies do the moving, and a villa at the top of the hill is a call every time you want a coffee. Ask for a villa in the twenty to thirty range if the climb bothers you.

Key Facts

- From about $2,000 a night, the best value of the private island group
- Thirty villas across three square kilometres, every one with a private pool
- Six Senses spa cut into the hillside, the deepest wellness programme in the Seychelles
- House reef snorkelling directly off the beach, no boat needed
- Fifteen minutes by boat to La Digue for a day of bikes and Anse Source d'Argent

**Best for:** Granite boulder villas and the strongest spa in the country

**Getting there:** Helicopter from Mahé, or fixed wing to Praslin then boat

**Watch out:** The island is steep and buggy dependent. Request a lower numbered villa if you would rather walk to breakfast than call for a lift.

#03 Anse Louis · south west Mahé

### 03\. [Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas](#overview)

from about $1,900 a night with butler and most dining, verify live

This is the old MAIA Luxury Resort at Anse Louis, rebranded under Anantara and still, for my money, the best value proposition in the Seychelles at the top end. Thirty villas, all identical, all with a private pool, all with a personal villa host who genuinely does everything from unpacking to booking the boat. Nobody gets a worse room, which removes the category anxiety that ruins a lot of resort bookings.

The rate is close to fully inclusive: breakfast anywhere and any time, most meals, house drinks, the minibar, laundry and airport transfers. Run the arithmetic against a $900 villa rate plus $250 a head a day for food and drink and this lands cheaper than it looks on the search page.

Anse Louis is a small crescent, and the beach is good rather than the best in the country. What you are buying is the hillside privacy, the spa pavilions among the boulders and a twenty five minute drive from the airport instead of a helicopter charter. For a first Seychelles trip where you want one property and no logistics, this is my pick.

Key Facts

- From about $1,900 a night with breakfast, most meals, house drinks and transfers included
- Thirty identical 250 square metre villas, each with pool and personal villa host
- Twenty five minutes by road from Mahé airport, no seaplane or helicopter
- Spa treatment pavilions set into the granite above Anse Louis
- Rebranded from MAIA Luxury Resort and Spa, same villas and largely the same team

**Best for:** Private island privacy without leaving Mahé

**Getting there:** Road from Mahé airport, about 25 minutes

**Watch out:** Anse Louis is a small beach with a shore break in the south east monsoon. If you want a long walkable beach, book Desroches or Raffles instead.

#04 Outer islands · 35 minutes by fixed wing from Mahé

### 04\. [Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island](#compare)

from about $1,600 a night, verify live

Desroches is a coral island in the Amirantes, two hundred and thirty kilometres from Mahé, and it is the only place in this guide where you can cycle for an hour along a beach and not see another person. Fourteen kilometres of sand, most of it empty, is a thing the granite inner islands simply cannot offer because their beaches are short crescents between headlands.

The resort is a Four Seasons in the good sense: consistent, well run, kind to children, with a dive centre that is the best in the country because the drop offs here are genuinely wild. Manta season runs through the south east monsoon and the fly fishing on the flats draws people who book a year out. The Island Conservation Society station on the island runs the tortoise sanctuary and takes guests along.

The trade off is that Desroches is flat and coral, not granite. If the boulder photographs are why you are going to the Seychelles, this will feel like a different country. Pair it with three nights on Praslin or La Digue and you get both.

Key Facts

- From about $1,600 a night, with a 35 minute scheduled flight from Mahé
- Fourteen kilometres of beach, cycling is the way you move around
- The strongest dive and fly fishing operation of any Seychelles resort
- Island Conservation Society station and giant tortoise sanctuary on site
- Seventy one keys, the largest resort in this ranked list

**Best for:** Fourteen kilometres of beach and outer island diving

**Getting there:** Scheduled fixed wing from Mahé, about 35 minutes

**Watch out:** Flat coral island, not granite boulders. The flights are scheduled and luggage is weight limited at twenty kilograms a person.

### 05\. [Fregate Island Private](#compare)

from about $5,000 a night all inclusive when open, verify live

Frégate is a two hundred and ninety three acre island run as one resort with sixteen villas, seven beaches and a giant tortoise population above two thousand animals. There is nowhere else in the world where that ratio of wildlife to guests exists on a commercial property. The tortoises are not in a pen. They are on the path to your villa.

The island grows a large share of its own food, generates its own power and desalinates its own water, and Anse Victorin is regularly called the best beach in the world by people who have seen a lot of beaches. The villas are built into the granite with pools cut between the boulders.

Two honest caveats. The property is closed for a full renovation and is scheduled to return during 2026, so treat any rate you see today as provisional and confirm before you book flights. And Frégate has always been the least polished of the private islands on service. You go for the island, not for the choreography.

Key Facts

- Closed for renovation, scheduled to reopen during 2026. Confirm before booking flights
- Two hundred and ninety three acres, sixteen villas, seven private beaches
- More than two thousand Aldabra giant tortoises, the largest population on any resort island
- Own farm, desalination and power generation
- Anse Victorin is regularly ranked among the finest beaches in the world

**Best for:** Wildlife on a scale no other resort can match

**Getting there:** Helicopter from Mahé, about 20 minutes

**Watch out:** Renovation dates in the Seychelles move. Ask for written confirmation of your dates and a free cancellation rate before you buy long haul flights.

### 06\. [Raffles Seychelles](#overview)

from about $900 a night, verify live

Raffles is the practical answer for a family that wants a pool villa without a helicopter bill. Eighty six villas above Anse Takamaka on the north east corner of Praslin, every one with a private pool and a terrace, the smallest at one hundred and twenty five square metres. Two children's clubs, an enormous spa, and a beach you can actually swim off for most of the year.

Praslin is the reason to be here. Vallée de Mai, the UNESCO site where the [Coco de Mer](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fcoco-de-mer-hotel-black-parrot-suites.html) palm grows wild, is fifteen minutes away. Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette, the two beaches that appear in every Seychelles list, are both on this island, and Georgette sits inside the [Constance Lémuria](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fconstance-lemuria-seychelles.html) estate a few minutes down the coast. You are also thirty minutes by boat from La Digue.

It is a big resort by Seychelles standards and it feels like one at breakfast. If you want silence, this is not it. If you want three generations fed, watered and in separate villas for under half the private island rate, it is the strongest option in the country.

Key Facts

- From about $900 a night, roughly half the private island entry rate
- Eighty six villas, all with a private pool, from 125 square metres
- Fifteen minutes to Vallée de Mai and the wild [Coco de Mer](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-101801746-17288959?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fsc%2Fcoco-de-mer-hotel-black-parrot-suites.html) palms
- Two supervised kids clubs and genuine interconnecting villa options
- Reachable by ferry, so no domestic flight is required

**Best for:** Families and multi generation trips

**Getting there:** 15 minute flight or 60 minute ferry from Mahé, then 15 minutes by road

**Watch out:** The hillside villas involve a real climb and buggy waits at peak times. Book a beachfront category if anyone in the party has limited mobility.

#07 Anse Kerlan · north west Praslin

### 07\. [Constance Lémuria](#compare)

from about $850 a night, verify live

Lémuria holds the single best asset on Praslin: Anse Georgette, a curved beach between two granite headlands that is reachable on foot from the resort and, for everyone else, only by asking the gate for permission in advance. Staying here means you walk to it before breakfast and have it to yourself.

The resort itself is older than Raffles and reads more traditional, with thatch, timber and a lot of mature planting. Three beaches, three restaurants, a spa in the trees, and the only eighteen hole championship golf course in the Seychelles, which climbs the hill behind the property and is worth playing even if you play badly.

Hawksbill turtles nest on Anse Georgette between October and February and the resort's conservation team will wake you for a hatching if you ask. That is the memory people bring home from Lémuria, not the room.

Key Facts

- From about $850 a night, the best value five star on Praslin
- Anse Georgette on the estate, restricted access for non guests
- The only eighteen hole championship golf course in the Seychelles
- Hawksbill turtle nesting on the resort beaches from October to February
- Three beaches, so there is always one out of the wind

**Best for:** Anse Georgette, and the only championship golf in the country

**Getting there:** 15 minute flight or 60 minute ferry from Mahé, then 20 minutes by road

**Watch out:** The property is a generation older than Raffles. Book a Pool Villa or above, because the entry Junior Suites show their age.

#08 Anse Réunion · La Digue

### 08\. [Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie](#overview)

from about $450 a night, verify live

La Digue has no airport, almost no cars and around three thousand residents, and Anse Source d'Argent, the granite and turquoise beach on every Seychelles poster including the hero at the top of this page, is on its south west corner. L'Orangeraie is the best place to stay on the island and it costs a fifth of a private island villa.

The design is Balinese rather than Creole, timber and thatch stacked up a hillside garden with a spa at the top and a pool complex at the bottom. Villas at the top get the sunset view over the water and a serious set of steps. You will spend the days on a bicycle, because that is how La Digue works.

Nobody should book La Digue expecting resort polish. The island runs at its own pace, the restaurants close early and the ferry is the ferry. That is precisely the appeal, and it is the antidote to four nights of butler service on a private island.

Key Facts

- From about $450 a night, the value pick in this guide
- Fifteen minutes on a bicycle to Anse Source d'Argent
- Sixty three villas up a hillside garden with a summit spa
- No airport on La Digue, arrival is by ferry from Praslin
- Bicycles are the transport for the whole island, including guests

**Best for:** La Digue on a bicycle, at a rate that leaves money for everything else

**Getting there:** Ferry from Praslin, 15 minutes, then a golf buggy

**Watch out:** The hillside villas are up a lot of steps and the sunset view costs the climb. Anse Source d'Argent charges an entry fee through L'Union Estate.

#09 Anse Bois de Rose · south west Praslin

### 09\. [Coco de Mer and Black Parrot Suites](#compare)

from about $320 a night, verify live

I include this because a great many people who want the Seychelles cannot spend two thousand dollars a night and are then told, by every glossy list, that the country is out of reach. It is not. Coco de Mer sits on Anse Bois de Rose on the quiet south west of Praslin and the adults only Black Parrot Suites above it are a genuine step up for a small premium.

This is a four star with a five star setting, not a luxury resort in disguise. The rooms are simple, the buffet is a buffet, and the beach at low tide is shallow and seagrass heavy, which is true of most of that coast. What you get is Praslin at three hundred dollars, with Vallée de Mai, Anse Lazio and the La Digue ferry all within half an hour.

Book the Black Parrot side if you are a couple. It is quieter, the pool is better and the rate difference is smaller than the experience gap.

Key Facts

- From about $320 a night, the entry point to a Seychelles trip
- Adults only Black Parrot Suites sit above the main hotel on the hillside
- Twenty five minutes to Vallée de Mai and thirty to Anse Lazio
- Half board packages are usually the sensible booking here
- Four star standard in a five star location, priced honestly

**Best for:** Getting to the Seychelles at all, on a real budget

**Getting there:** 15 minute flight or 60 minute ferry from Mahé, then 25 minutes by road

**Watch out:** Anse Bois de Rose is shallow and seagrass heavy at low tide. Swim from Anse Lazio or use the pool and go elsewhere for the water.

## Nine More Worth Booking

These did not make the ranked list, either because I have not stayed recently enough to rank them honestly or because they are excellent at something narrow rather than excellent overall. Two of them, Platte and Alphonse, are the most interesting things happening in the Seychelles right now, and neither appears in most hotel round ups.

## The Beaches Actually Worth Planning Around

The Seychelles has hundreds of beaches and around seven that should shape an itinerary. The distinction that matters is not beauty, because they are all beautiful. It is whether you can swim, when, and whether you can get in.

The best beaches in the Seychelles compared by island, why they matter, swimming conditions and how to access them

Beach

Island

Why It Matters

Swimming

Access

Anse Source d'Argent

La Digue

The granite boulder beach on every poster of the Seychelles

Shallow, calm, better for photographs than swimming

Entry fee through L'Union Estate, best at low tide before 9am

Anse Georgette

Praslin

A perfect curve between two headlands, often empty

Excellent, deep enough to swim, some current at the edges

Through the Constance Lémuria estate, guests walk in, others must call ahead

Anse Lazio

Praslin

The best all round swimming beach in the inner islands

Very good, with shade and two beach restaurants

Public, twenty minutes by road from most Praslin hotels

Anse Intendance

Mahé

Wild, long and empty, backed by takamaka trees

Big shore break, strong in the south east monsoon. Care needed

Public, road access from Anse Takamaka in the south

Petite Anse

Mahé

A sheltered crescent inside the Four Seasons estate

Calm and protected most of the year

Public by law, but you go through the resort or arrive by boat

Anse Victorin

Frégate

Regularly called the finest beach in the world

Excellent, and essentially private

Resort guests only, so it depends on Frégate reopening

Grand Anse

La Digue

Enormous, dramatic and almost always empty

Dangerous currents from May to September. Look, do not swim

Twenty minutes by bicycle across the island

Every beach in the Seychelles is public by law, including the ones inside resort estates. In practice you reach Anse Georgette through the Constance Lémuria gate and Petite Anse through Four Seasons, so staying at those properties is the easy version.

## The Seychelles Month by Month

There is no cyclone season here, which is the single best thing about the destination, and no bad month in the way a Caribbean island has bad months. What changes is the wind, and the wind changes everything: sea state, snorkelling visibility, seaweed and rates.

Month by month guide to the Seychelles with sea temperature, monsoon wind, hotel rates and a verdict

Month

Sea

Wind

Rates

Verdict

January

29°C

North west monsoon

Peak until mid month

Warm, humid, short heavy showers. Best diving visibility of the year

February

29°C

North west monsoon

High

The wettest month on Mahé, and still perfectly good on the smaller islands

March

30°C

Turning

High

Wind drops, sea flattens, whale shark season has not started. Quietly excellent

April

30°C

Calm between monsoons

Peak

My pick. Glass water, thirty degree sea, best visibility for snorkelling

May

28°C

South east begins

High then falling

The last of the calm, then the trade wind arrives late in the month

June

27°C

South east monsoon

Shoulder

Breezy and cooler. Seaweed starts on south and east facing beaches

July

26°C

South east monsoon

Low outside school holidays

Windiest month. Great for kitesurfing, poor for glassy snorkelling

August

26°C

South east monsoon

Shoulder

Whale shark season begins. Windy, cheaper, choose a north facing beach

September

27°C

Easing

Low

The value month. Whale sharks off Mahé and rates well below April

October

28°C

Calm between monsoons

Rising

The second calm window and the start of turtle nesting

November

29°C

Light

High

Excellent, and the sea is at its clearest before the rains

December

29°C

North west begins

Peak from mid month

Christmas pricing arrives around the fifteenth and is brutal

If you can travel any week of the year, take the first two weeks of April or the middle of October. If you want the lowest rates and do not mind wind, take September, which also gives you whale sharks off Mahé.

## Seaweed, the Monsoon and the Thing Nobody Prints

Two monsoons cross the Seychelles. The north west runs roughly from November to March, bringing warmth, humidity and short heavy rain, with the calmest water of the year in the gaps. The south east runs roughly from May to September, bringing a steady trade wind, cooler nights and choppier sea.

The consequence that changes holidays is sargassum. Through the south east monsoon, weed piles up on south and east facing beaches, and on the worst weeks it forms a metre wide band along the tideline. Resorts rake it at dawn. It comes back at lunchtime. No brochure has ever shown you this and it is the single most common complaint I read in genuine reviews of the Seychelles.

The fix is orientation. Between June and September, book a north or west facing beach: Beau Vallon or Carana on Mahé, Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette on Praslin, the north coast of La Digue. Private islands are the safest bet of all, because [Six Senses Zil Pasyon](#overview) and [North Island](#overview) both have beaches on several aspects and will simply move your sun loungers to the sheltered side.

✦ What I Would Do

If your dates are locked into July or August, do not book a south facing villa and hope. Ask the reservations team directly which beach is in the lee of the trade wind in your week, and book that side of the island. Every good Seychelles resort will answer that question honestly, because they would rather move you before you arrive than after.

## Tortoises, Turtles and the Coco de Mer

The Seychelles is not a beach destination that happens to have wildlife. It is one of the most successful conservation stories in the world that happens to have beaches, and the resorts here are unusually entangled with it. Booking with that in mind gets you experiences no spa menu offers.

**Aldabra giant tortoises.** More than two thousand roam [Fregate Island Private](#compare), which is the largest population on any resort island on earth. [North Island](#overview) has a reintroduced population as part of its restoration, Curieuse off Praslin has a wild colony you can visit on a day trip, and [Four Seasons Desroches](#compare) has a sanctuary run with the Island Conservation Society.

**Turtles.** Hawksbills nest on Praslin and the outer islands between October and February, which is unusual because most of the world's hawksbills nest at night and Seychelles hawksbills come up in daylight. [Constance Lémuria](#compare) runs the best known programme, with a conservation team who will call your villa for a hatching. Green turtles nest on the outer islands, mostly Aldabra and the Amirantes.

**The Coco de Mer.** The largest seed in the plant kingdom grows wild in exactly two places, both here, and the accessible one is Vallée de Mai on Praslin, a UNESCO World Heritage site fifteen minutes from Raffles Seychelles and Constance Lémuria. Go at opening time, take the long circuit, and listen for the black parrot, which lives nowhere else.

**Whale sharks.** August to October off Mahé, with the best sightings out of Beau Vallon. The Marine Conservation Society Seychelles runs monitoring trips and takes paying guests, which is a better morning than any hotel excursion.

## Island Hopping Without Losing Two Days

**Mahé to Praslin.** Two options. Cat Cocos runs a fast catamaran from Victoria in about an hour, several times a day, at roughly $80 each way, and it is a rough ride in the south east monsoon. Air Seychelles flies the route in fifteen minutes for about $150, with a strict twenty kilogram baggage allowance and frequent schedule changes. I take the plane on arrival with luggage and the ferry when I am moving light.

**Praslin to La Digue.** A fifteen minute ferry, several times daily, about $20. No booking anxiety needed outside peak weeks. There is no airport on La Digue and there never will be.

**Private islands.** North Island and Frégate use helicopters from Mahé, twenty to twenty five minutes, usually included at North Island and charged at Frégate. Félicité is a boat from La Digue or a helicopter. Budget $400 to $800 a person each way if it is not in your rate.

**Outer islands.** Desroches, Alphonse and Platte all use scheduled fixed wing flights from Mahé, thirty five to ninety minutes, with hard weight limits. Book the resort's transfer package rather than arranging your own, because the schedules move and the resort holds the seats.

**Getting there at all.** Emirates, Qatar and Etihad connect through the Gulf, Air Seychelles and Ethiopian through Addis, and there are direct flights from Paris, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Mumbai. Most long haul arrivals land in the early morning, which means you can connect to Praslin the same day rather than paying for a Mahé night. If you are transiting the Gulf, my [Priority Pass review](/travel-guides/is-priority-pass-worth-it-2026) covers whether the lounge access is worth it on that routing, and the [Airalo eSIM guide](/airalo-esim) saves you buying a Seychelles SIM at arrivals.

## Seychelles or Maldives

This is the comparison every reader is actually making, and the honest answer is that they are not competing for the same holiday. The Maldives is twenty six flat coral atolls, one resort per island, an overwater villa, a house reef at your steps and a week in which you never need to make a decision. The Seychelles is granite mountains rising out of the sea, rainforest, a real country with towns, buses, markets and restaurants, beaches you can walk for kilometres and almost no overwater villas anywhere.

Book the Maldives if the water is the point, if you want to snorkel from your ladder, if you are on a honeymoon that involves doing nothing, and if a single flight plus a seaplane is as much logistics as you want. Book the Seychelles if you want to hire a bicycle, hike to an empty beach, see tortoises and a UNESCO forest, eat somewhere that is not owned by your hotel and combine three genuinely different islands in one trip.

On price they are closer than people expect. Entry level five star in both runs $800 to $1,000 a night, and the very top runs into five figures. The Seychelles wins on land based activity and on having a real destination outside the resort. The Maldives wins on water, on reef access and on the sheer number of properties competing for your booking, which keeps rates honest.

If you are still deciding, read my [Maldives versus Bora Bora comparison](/travel-guides/maldives-vs-bora-bora) and the [Maldives resort ranking](/destinations/maldives), which uses exactly the same tests as this guide.

## What the Glossy Lists Do Not Tell You

**The Seychelles is expensive on the ground, not just in the room.** Almost everything is imported. A main course in a resort restaurant runs $45 to $70, a bottle of ordinary wine $60 upward, and a bottle of water at the beach $5. Half board or a near inclusive rate at [Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas](#overview) often works out cheaper than a lower room rate plus paying as you go.

**There are almost no overwater villas.** If that is the image in your head, you want the Maldives or Bora Bora. The Seychelles builds into hillsides and boulders because the water gets deep fast and the planning rules are strict.

**Inter island travel eats half days.** A move between islands costs you a morning, minimum, and the outer island flights are weight limited at twenty kilograms. Two bases in ten nights is right. Three is a logistics exercise.

**Not every famous beach is swimmable.** Anse Source d'Argent is a photograph, not a swim, and it charges entry through L'Union Estate. Grand Anse on La Digue has currents that have killed people between May and September. Swim at Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette, Petite Anse or the sheltered side of a private island.

**Frégate is closed.** It reopens during 2026 after a full renovation, and Seychelles renovation dates move. Do not buy flights against a provisional reopening without a free cancellation rate.

**The mosquitoes are real in the wet months.** January and February on Mahé, particularly around forest and stream valleys. Bring repellent, because resort supplies are priced accordingly.

If you are planning the trip around the water rather than the country, my [overwater villa guide](/travel-guides/best-overwater-villas-maldives) is the honest alternative, and for a longer Indian Ocean loop the [Dubai stopover ranking](/destinations/dubai) covers the layover most people end up taking. ## Frequently Asked Questions

- ### What is the best luxury resort in the Seychelles in 2026?

North Island is the best if the budget has no ceiling, at roughly $10,000 a night fully inclusive for eleven villas and twenty two guests. For most people Six Senses Zil Pasyon on Félicité is the better booking at about $2,000 a night, because it delivers the private island experience, granite boulder villas and the strongest spa in the country at a fifth of the rate. Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas is the value pick at the top end from about $1,900 with almost everything included.

- ### How much does a luxury holiday in the Seychelles cost?

Budget $850 to $2,000 a night for a five star pool villa in 2026. Raffles Seychelles and Constance Lémuria on Praslin open around $850 to $900, Six Senses Zil Pasyon around $2,000, Four Seasons Desroches around $1,600 and North Island around $10,000 fully inclusive. Le Domaine de L'Orangeraie on La Digue runs about $450 and Coco de Mer about $320. Add $250 a head a day for food and drink at properties that are not inclusive, and $400 to $800 a person for inter island flights or helicopter transfers.

- ### Which Seychelles island should I stay on?

Mahé for short trips, arrivals and the widest choice of hotels. Praslin for families and the best value five stars, plus Vallée de Mai, Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette. La Digue for couples, bicycles and Anse Source d'Argent. Félicité or Frégate for a private island without an outer island flight. The Amirantes and the Alphonse group for divers and fly fishers. Most good two week trips combine Praslin or La Digue with one private island.

- ### When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

April and October, the two calm windows between the monsoons. The sea is glassy, visibility for snorkelling is at its best and temperatures sit around thirty degrees. May and November are almost as good. July and August bring the south east trade wind, which piles seaweed onto south and east facing beaches and makes the sea choppy, but it also brings whale sharks and the lowest rates of the year outside the European school holidays.

- ### Is there a seaweed problem in the Seychelles?

Yes, seasonally, and no glossy list mentions it. From roughly June to September the south east monsoon pushes sargassum onto south and east facing beaches. Resorts rake it daily, which helps, but it does not disappear. If you are travelling in those months, book a north or west facing beach: Beau Vallon and Carana on Mahé, Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette on Praslin, or a private island where the resort can move you to the sheltered side.

- ### Can you see giant tortoises and turtles in the Seychelles?

Yes. Aldabra giant tortoises live wild on Frégate, which has more than two thousand, on North Island and on Curieuse, and in sanctuaries on Desroches and elsewhere. Hawksbill turtles nest on Praslin and the outer islands between October and February, and green turtles nest on the outer islands. Constance Lémuria and Four Seasons Desroches both run conservation teams that will take guests to a nesting or a hatching if you ask at check in.

- ### Do I need to fly between the Seychelles islands?

Not always. Cat Cocos runs a fast catamaran ferry from Mahé to Praslin in about an hour, and a short ferry links Praslin to La Digue in fifteen minutes. Air Seychelles flies Mahé to Praslin in fifteen minutes for around $150 each way. The outer islands, Desroches, Alphonse and Platte, need a scheduled fixed wing flight of thirty five to ninety minutes, and North Island, Frégate and Félicité usually use a helicopter.

- ### Is the Seychelles better than the Maldives?

They are different holidays. The Maldives is flat coral atolls, overwater villas, house reefs at every resort and one island per resort, so you rarely leave. The Seychelles is granite mountains, forest, real beaches you can walk for kilometres, three inhabited islands with towns and restaurants, and almost no overwater villas. Book the Maldives for the water and doing nothing. Book the Seychelles if you want to hire a bicycle, hike, see wildlife and feel like you are in a country rather than a resort.

- ### Are there overwater villas in the Seychelles?

Essentially no, and any listing that promises one is misleading you. The Seychelles has deep water close to shore, granite bathymetry and strict marine planning rules, so the overwater bungalow model that works in the Maldives and Bora Bora has never been built here at scale. What you get instead are hillside pool villas built into the boulders and beachfront villas a few metres from the sand.

- ### How many days do you need in the Seychelles?

Ten to fourteen nights, because you have flown a long way and inter island moves eat a half day each. My recommended shape is four nights on Praslin or La Digue for the beaches, forest and bicycles, then five to seven nights on a private island or at Desroches to finish. A single week works if you stay on one island and accept you will not see the others.

- ### Does Luxury Hotel Compare earn commission from these bookings?

Yes. I earn a small commission through the Booking.com affiliate programme when readers book through my links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the ranking, and no resort in this guide has paid for placement or been given a preview of what I wrote.
