There is a Burmese cat called Fa-Raon who has the run of the lobby and is not a marketing device. The rooms are the largest of any Paris Palace on average, which matters more than any other single fact in this city, because Parisian luxury usually means beautiful and small. The garden courtyard is a genuine 1,200 square metre garden, not a light well with pots, and in May you can have lunch under the chestnut trees with no sense of being in the eighth arrondissement at all. Condé Nast's reviewer described the palette as pale pinks, Alice blues and mint greens with Bonapartean gold, which is accurate, and the effect is more delicate than the Rivoli Palaces. Shang Palace was the first Chinese restaurant in France to win a Michelin star and is still the best Cantonese dining in the city. La Bauhinia under the art nouveau glass dome does the breakfast and afternoon tea. There is a 16 metre pool, which in central Paris is a real amenity. The catch is location: the 16th is handsome, quiet and residential, so you are taking taxis to dinner in the 1st or the 6th. Rosewood closed it for four years and reopened in 2017, and the restoration is the most interesting of the recent Paris projects because it did not try to freeze the place in the eighteenth century. Classified salons were restored to the millimetre; everything else was handed to contemporary designers, including two Grands Appartements by Karl Lagerfeld. What that gives you is a Palace that feels current. Rooms are cleaner lined than at the Ritz or the Meurice, there is a proper 16 metre pool and spa underground, and Les Ambassadeurs, the gilded ballroom that used to be the formal restaurant, is now the bar. Sitting in that room with a drink, under the mirrors and the marble, is one of the better hours available in this city for the price of a cocktail. L'Écrin holds a Michelin star, Brasserie d'Aumont is the all day room, and the Jardin d'Hiver is where Parisians actually take tea. Hôtel de Berri sits on a quiet street between the Champs-Élysées and the Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in a townhouse with a walled garden, and it runs 75 keys full of genuine antiques and commissioned art rather than hotel furniture. It is not a Palace and it does not pretend to be one. There is no three star restaurant, the spa is small and the lobby will not stop anyone in their tracks. What there is: rooms that are decorated with actual taste, a garden you can eat breakfast in, and a location that puts you four minutes from George V and Avenue Montaigne while paying roughly a third of what they charge. It is also the only hotel in this guide where Marriott Bonvoy points do serious work. If you have an old list of the Paris Palaces saved somewhere, it is out of date. **The tourist tax went up again on 1 January 2026.** The taxe de séjour is charged per adult per night and scales with the category of the hotel, so a Palace room sits at the top rate. Since 2025 an additional Île-de-France Mobilités levy set at 200 percent of the base tax has applied across the region, stacked on top of the existing 10 percent departmental and 15 percent regional supplements. Hotels collect the lot at checkout, so it never shows in your prepaid total. On a week in a five star room for two it is a real line item, not a rounding error. **The monuments came back.** Notre-Dame reopened to visitors in December 2024 after the fire, the Grand Palais completed its restoration and reopened fully in 2025, and the Louvre has been running timed entry ever since the Olympic year, which means you now book a slot or you do not get in. Reserve the Louvre, the Orsay and Notre-Dame the moment your flights are confirmed, and ask the concierge for the early access slots before you resort to a third party tour. **The new openings are Left Bank and Marais, not the 8th.** Le Grand Hôtel Cayré, Miiro's first hotel, set the tone on Boulevard Raspail, and Experimental Marais opened on the Rue du Temple as the cocktail group's most confident Paris hotel yet. Neither is a Palace. Both are better value than anything in the Golden Triangle and are where the interesting new dining is going. ## What Palace Status Actually Means Five stars in France is a technical classification. Palace is a judgement. The French Ministry of Tourism created the distinction in 2010 because the five star band had become crowded and there was no official category above it, and it is awarded by a Palace Commission that assesses service, design, gastronomy, cultural identity and whether the hotel functions as a destination in its own right. Awards are reviewed, and hotels do lose the label. What it means for you practically is a floor, not a ceiling. Every Palace will have a concierge who can get you the table, a spa, a restaurant of real ambition and staffing ratios that do not collapse at nine at night. What it does not tell you is room size, view, warmth or value, which is precisely why the ranking above is not simply the Palace list in alphabetical order. If you are booking one drink, get to Bar Hemingway at six. ## The Breakfast Test Breakfast is the single most reliable tell of how a Paris hotel is being run, and it is also the charge that catches people out. At Palace level, expect USD$70 to USD$100 a head for the full à la carte breakfast, and note that it is very rarely included in a Booking.com rate. Over five nights for two that is another USD$760 you did not plan for. **What good looks like.** Viennoiserie baked in the building that morning, not bought in. Eggs cooked to order rather than held in a bain-marie. Real coffee served without being asked twice. Le Bristol, the George V and Cheval Blanc all clear that bar without effort. Le Meurice's Le Dalí room is the prettiest place to eat it. **How to avoid paying it.** Book a rate with breakfast included when the gap is under USD$55 a head, because it almost never is at these hotels. Use Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status at Hôtel de Berri, where breakfast is a genuine elite benefit. Or do what Parisians do and take coffee and a croissant at the corner café for USD$5 then eat properly at eleven. ## Paris Month by Month Condé Nast will tell you spring and autumn. That is true and it is not useful, because in Paris the calendar that decides your bill is the events calendar, not the weather. The September crush has gone, the light in the Tuileries is the best of the year, the truffle and game menus start, and Palace rates come off their September peak by 20 to 30 percent while every terrace is still open. ## Getting There and Getting Around **From Charles de Gaulle.** A private transfer runs USD$95 to USD$150 and takes 45 to 70 minutes depending on the péripherique. Every hotel here will arrange one and charge you more for it. The RER B is 30 minutes to Châtelet and about USD$15 but it is not a train to take with three suitcases. Taxis to central Paris operate on a fixed fare, which is the detail most visitors do not know: refuse anything metered or negotiated in the terminal. **From Orly.** Metro Line 14 now runs directly into the city, which is the single biggest transport improvement of the last few years and takes about 25 minutes to Châtelet. A taxi is a fixed fare and 30 to 50 minutes. **In the city.** Walk. Central Paris is four miles across and the metro is only worth it for the river crossings and the 16th. Buy a Navigo Easy card, or use contactless on the barriers, and download the RATP app. Cycling on the Vélib' network is genuinely good now that the segregated lanes on Rivoli and Sébastopol are finished. **Bookings to make before you fly.** Timed entry for the Louvre and the Orsay, a slot for Notre-Dame, and any three star restaurant at least six weeks out. A Superior room at a Palace can be 25 square metres, which is less than a mid tier resort room in Bali. Le Bristol, Mandarin Oriental and Cheval Blanc are the three that solve this; the rest expect you to move up a category. **The extras are not small.** Breakfast at USD$70 to USD$100 a head, the taxe de séjour at checkout, USD$95 to USD$150 each way for transfers, and USD$40 for a cocktail. Add roughly 20 percent to whatever the room rate implies before you decide what you can afford. **Fashion week is a different city.** Two weeks in March and two in late September, rates in the 8th roughly double, the good tables vanish and the lobbies fill with people working. If you are not part of it, book either side. **August is quieter than you think and emptier than you want.** Parisians leave. So do a good number of chefs, and plenty of neighbourhood restaurants close for the month. The upside is space and softer rates; check what is actually open before committing. **Air conditioning is not a given.** Every hotel in this guide has it, but many otherwise excellent Paris four stars do not, and July heat in a top floor Haussmann room under a zinc roof is genuinely unpleasant. Confirm it in writing if you are booking outside this list. **Three nights is not enough.** Paris rewards a slow second half.
